NEW MUSIC: D’Angelo – Black Messiah

15 Dec

And on December 15 music lovers freaked out in the best way possible as D’Angelo released his first new album in nearly 15 years when he dropped Black Messiah. The album is up on Spotify (see below) and click HERE to read a post from NPR Music and one HERE from Pitchfork.

On a personal level, it well into the night between June 9 and 10, 2012 we were deep in the middle of nowhere Tennessee (Manchester to be exact) at Bonnaroo inside This Tent for ?uestlove’s Superjam when we heard one of the most amazing and yet familiar voices on vocals. It was in fact the voice of D’Angelo, gracing the stage for the first time in 12 years. At that moment my friends and I looked at each other in amazement and were captivated by the R&B crooner. I didn’t think it could get better. Today it has. Welcome back, D’Angelo!

Now Playing: Tuxedo – “Wonderful Christmastime” and “Do It”

9 Dec

Time to bust out your favorite tuxedo t-shirt! My latest music obsession is courtesy of Mayer Hawthorne and Jake One who together make up the duo TUXEDO! It’s time to get a little bit funky and for the holiday season check out their rendition of Paul McCartney’s “Wonderful Christmastime” but really you need to listen to “Do It.” If you thought Chromeo brought the funk back to mainstream in 2014, give a listen to this and get ready for the debut album from Tuxedo on March 3.

VIDEO: St. Paul & The Broken Bones – NPR Music – Tiny Desk Concert

8 Dec

It always brings a smile to my face when someone says “you know that band you were telling me about…..I’m absolutely in love with them now.” I can’t think of an artist on the Life is Beautiful 2014 lineup who created that moment over and over again before saying St. Paul & The Broken Bones. Ironically one of the performances I tabbed for people as a “must see,” I missed! Sadly I had some responsibilities that kept me occupied and couldn’t break away but hearing from so many friends how much fun they had at the show and how St. Paul & The Broken Bones was their favorite performance at the festival was music to my ears. That right there was enough to make me feel as if I had seen the performance myself.

Now if you haven’t had a chance to see St. Paul & The Broken Bones live, you must put this at the top of your concert list. Paul Janeway oozes soul and his band is top notch. Just click play below to view their NPR tiny desk concert and be amazed. St. Paul & The Broken Bones fans, you need to watch this too!

Enjoy!!

2 Dec

A must listen! A) I hope you’re familiar with the amazingness of Swear and Shake in general and B) if not, get on it! Happy Tuesday y’all!

Now Playing: San Cisco – “Run”

1 Dec

Some of my favorite Australian’s are back! Give a listen to this new track, “Run” from San Cisco. Upbeat, poppy and definitely a track to get your blood flowing after gorging over Thanksgiving. Will this be the song that breaks them in the US? I sure hope so.

Now Playing: James Bay – “Hold Back The River”

24 Nov

Fresh off a fall tour opening for Hozier, British singer/songwriter James Bay is back with a new EP, Hold Back The River.

Now Playing: SUPERGROUP – New Bassment Tapes (Elvis Costello, Jim James, Marcus Mumford, Rhiannon Giddens, Taylor Goldsmith)

21 Nov

Thank you T Bone Burnett! Thanks to the legendary musician, songwriter, and producer, this amazing supergroup of Elvis Costello, Jim James, Marcus Mumford, Rhiannon Giddens and Taylor Goldsmith T Bone Burnett, was put together to record (and now perform!) unused Bob Dylan lyrics written during the original Basement Tapes sessions. A couple nights ago this supergroup took to the stage on Jimmy Kimmel Live and now tonight on Showtime the documentary Lost Songs: The Basement Tapes Continued airs! The documentary goes behind the scenes with the talented songwriters listed above as they record their interpretations of lost and now found lyrics from Bob Dylan’s legendary Basement Tapes Sessions! Read more HERE from RollingStone.com and see the trailer HERE from Showtime.com. The album Lost on the River: The New Basement Tapes was released on November 11.

Now Playing: Mary J. Blige/Disclosure – “Follow”

19 Nov

I don’t know about anyone else but it’s like these two were destined to work together. When Disclosure dropped “F For You” with Mary J. Blige I was in awe and now that they are producing her new album, The London Sessions, I am in music paradise. “Right Now” came out last month and now let your ears give a listen to “Follow.” The album drops next week, November 24.

New Music: Mark Ronson ft. Bruno Mars – “Uptown Funk!”

11 Nov

Dad! I know you’re reading this post so you have to listen to this track! Instantly thought of you when I first heard this.

Anyone who know me understands what a huge Mark Ronson fan I am (if you think he’s an incredible musician/producer you should hear one of his DJ sets) and while yesterday I posted his latest single “Daffodils” ft. Kevin Parker of Tame Impala, this track, “Uptown Funk!” ft. Bruno Mars is getting me so much more excited for the album Uptown Special to be released on January 27.

New Music: George Maple – “Vacant Space”

10 Nov

Give a listen to Australian, George Maple’s “Vacant Space,” swoon! The songstress is getting set to drop her second EP December 1 and my guess is that 2015 is going to be a massive year for her. You may recognize her voice from Flume’s “Bring You Down” and now the Producer/DJ has returned the favor to drop some killer beats for this future star.
