These are getting really sad to keep writing in 2016. Gone way too young, R.I.P. Phife Dawg.
My love of hip-hop I can say was sprouted from listening to A Tribe Called Quest. Sure there were others too but there was always something about ATCQ, a realness and authenticity. Like other groups, they had their issues and eventually disbanded (and got back together on special occasions, lastly I believe in Nov. 2015 on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon) but together, they were simply the best.
New music from Kendrick. If you missed his performance on Jimmy Fallon last night, click play below to see him perform “Untitled 2.” The video has garnered nearly 800,000 views in under 24 hours.
Music fans, you must watch this! Making her debut on late night TV and backed by The Roots, here is Alessia Cara performing “HERE” last night on The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon. Click HERE to learn more about the song from Alessia. Bonus, you’ll get to see her live at the Life is Beautiful Festival in Downtown Las Vegas this September. PARTY!
Music fans, if you buy one album this year make it Leon Bridges‘ Coming Home which is out today! The smooth and sly 25 year old has already been compared to Sam Cooke and Otis Redding with his old-school soul sound and while his studio stuff has all the chops to become album of the year, it’s his live show that will have you weak in the knees. So do two things this new music Tuesday, go buy the album and go find yourself a Leon Bridges concert to attend.
Peace + Love + Music
Check out his performance last night on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.
Earlier this year I was super excited when I heard about Elvis Costello and The Roots collaborating on an album and well, here’s the first single, “Walk Us Uptown” form the forthcoming LP Wise Up Ghost. you can read more from PASTE Magazine, HERE.
Last night the Late Night with Jimmy Fallon episode (from February 22) featuring The Avett Brothers was re-aired and if you didn’t catch it either time on the tube, you must watch this killer performance. And if you’ve never seen them live I highly suggest you change that in 2013.
I love The Roots and I love Jimmy Fallon so naturally any music collaboration they dream up I am all about. Even with shenanigans like this, recording “Call Me Maybe” with it girl of the moment, Carly Rae Jepsen. The Late Night-ers used grade school instruments for this rendition and I have to say, it’s pretty amazing (how’s 3.3 million views in under 10 days?!). Just look at the facial reactions from The Roots (especially Black Thought), this is priceless. Once again Jimmy Fallon, take a bow – the Late Night King of today!
The Roots Crew where you at?! If you’ve never seen The Roots live (and as much as I love them as the house band on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, that does not count), you will not want to miss this performance. This show will push me into double digit Roots shows and I wish I could say I have been to more. Each and every time I see The Roots, the shows get better. They are filled with sweet music, infinite energy and flat out what a dance party should be, nonstop from beginning to end.
While some members have come and gone (Scott Storch, Rahzel), ?uestlove and Black Thought have been at the forefront and continuously produce some of the best music around (just listen to their collaboration Betty Wright & The Roots which was nominated for a GRAMMY earlier this year). And besides their original works, nobody does it better than The Roots when it comes to a marathon melody session running the gamut on songs from every genre. Add in ?uestlove leading Superjam and whoa, it’s going to be a special one on the farm. And since it’s Bonnaroo and traditionally there are some surprises, I personally would love to see Cody Chesnutt appear for “The Seed.” Probably won’t happen but I can dream.
We are 70 days away from Bonnaroo (yes I count) and the additional artist announcements and comedy lineup should be released in the next couple of weeks. So it had me thinking, The Roots are playing this year, they are Jimmy Fallon’s house band, Jimmy Fallon loves music and has performed at Bonnaroo before, how cool would it be if he was named to the comedy lineup AND did his show live from Bonnaroo on Friday night? We can dream, right?
