Maybe next year Bonnaroo…….

13 Jun

A little bittersweet start of the day for me as Bonnaroo 2013 is getting underway. That place in Manchester, Tennessee is home to four of the greatest days of the year. And personally I think Thursday is the best day of them all; some of the best performances happen the first day, not everyone has rolled into the grounds, it’s like the first day of school for first time Roovians and a reunion for veterans of Bonnaroo.  As much as I’d love to be there right now, putting together a little Festival called Life is Beautiful headlined by The Killers and Kings of Leon has taken up my time!  Hopefully next year I’ll be back on the farm enjoying the four day pop-up city of happiness in the middle of nowhere. Until then, looks like Bonnaroo 365, Twitter feeds and Facebook updates are what I’m going to be living vicariously through. If you are making the trek to Bonnaroo, enjoy the amazing lineup and say hello for me.

Video: My Bonnaroo

18 Jun

It took a week but I was finally able to put my Bonnaroo 2011 photos into a video slide show.  Everything is in sequential order from the moment we arrived until the final show.  Unfortunately I wasn’t able to capture every band I saw but hope you enjoy what I did capture.  Can’t wait until Bonnaroo 2012.  Let the countdown begin.

Countdown to Bonnaroo: 2 Days – Artist of the Day: Widespread Panic

7 Jun

“An honest tune with a lingering lead has taken me this far;” those are the first lyrics I knew of Widespread Panic thanks to my brother and I haven’t looked back.  11 studio recordings, 8 live records and 25 years later, the rock band from Athens, Georgia are regarded as one of the most iconic jam bands of all time.  And as the final artist slated to rock Bonnaroo, it seems fitting the band that headlined the inaugural festival 10 years ago gets to close out this year with what is sure to be an epic performance.   If this is in fact the final tour as people are speculating, what a ride it has been.

Countdown to Bonnaroo: 5 Days – Artist of the Day: Eminem

4 Jun

A five year hiatus didn’t do anything to diminish his reputation in the music game.  If anything it only made Eminem come back stronger to claim his stake as one of the all time elite in hip-hop. Fast forward three years, two new albums albums and now a total of 13 Grammy Awards to date and Slim Shady has an arsenal of material to drop at Bonnaroo.  As one of the headliners, expect the performance to be an intense 90 minutes. Perhaps a guest spot by Weezy while we’re at it?

Saturday 11:00 PM – 12:30 AM – What Stage

Countdown to Bonnaroo: 7 Days – Artist of the Day: The Black Keys

2 Jun

Here we go, one week from today the 10th Anniversary of Bonnaroo commences.  The best thing to come out of Akron isn’t Lebron James but The Black Keys.  It took a while but Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney finally hit it big with last year’s Brothers and have been riding a high since.  I’ve seen the duo twice already this year and the gritty rock riffs from Auerbach and Carney’s wailing on the drums left me craving more both times.

Saturday 8:00 PM – 9:30 PM – What Stage

Countdown to Bonnaroo: 8 Days – Artist of the Day: Lil Wayne

1 Jun

I don’t think I’d purchase a ticket to his concert but the simple fact that he’s performing at a festival, yeah I’ll check out Lil Wayne.  I’m actually getting excited to see his late night set because I’m sure he’ll put on one heck of a performance, he has a grip of songs that I think everyone knows and more than anything, he’s part of the Cash Money family and was part of the Hot Boys.  I also think since it’s the grand stage of Bonnaroo, Wayne has some surprises in store, maybe Drake?  Wayne did show up at Drake’s gig in Vegas over MDW in Vegas…..

Friday 1:30 AM – 3:00 AM – Which Stage

Countdown to Bonnaroo: 9 Days – Artist of the Day: Robert Plant & Band of Joy

31 May

Oh what a day it is, we are single digit days away from Bonnaroo!

Robert Plant, the name says it all.  As vocalist for one of the greatest rock outfits every formed, Plant is not only an icon in the world of music but still going strong and pumping out new tunes.  Touring with his current Band of Joy consisting of Patti Griffin, Buddy Miller, Darrell Scott, Byron House and Marco Giovino, the festival stage should be rocking with this talented group of musicians.  Also with Alison Krauss performing at Bonnaroo as well, I’d say chances are likely the duo who won Album of the Year at the 2009 Grammy Awards have a little something planned.

Now if you are around my age, you never had the chance to see Led Zeppelin live (one of those bands on a short list of if I could see any band/artist today) but the opportunity to see and hear the voice and lyricist who helped pave a soundtrack to my music influences, I’ll take that any day.

Countdown to Bonnaroo: 12 Days – Artist of the Day: Ray LaMontagne

28 May

To this day, Ray LaMontagne’s debut disc, Trouble, is by far one of my favorites of all time.  Now four discs, a Grammy and a little over decade after his journey into the world of music, the gifted singer-songwriter brings his sweet sound to Bonnaroo.  If you haven’t yet had the chance to hear LaMontagne’s raspy voice live, it is a must for every music aficionado.

Friday 6:15 PM – 7:45 PM – Which Stage

Countdown to Bonnaroo: 13 Days – Artist of the Day: Florence + The Machine

27 May

Lucky number 13.

I’d say in the last year, year and a half Florence + The Machine have taken America by storm so it’s no surprise that Bonnaroo is the latest place Florence Welch and her band will be performing at.  I am fascinated by Welch’s voice and the sound she projects.  All I can think to myself is WOW.  Should be quite the show to see.

Friday 6:45 PM – 8:15 PM – This Tent

Countdown to Bonnaroo: 15 Days – Artist of the Day: Galactic

25 May

If you’re ready to get funked up, Galactic will do just that.  The New Orleans legends who were part of the inaugural Bonnaroo and a staple band throughout the decade long run of the festival return to bring some funk and jazz to the masses.  Exuding energy and pure happiness, Galactic shows are memorable for sure and just about always include surprise guests sitting in for a song or the whole show.  Knowing the grand stage of Bonnaroo, I think we can all rest assured this will be one performance to catch.
