For all of us who grew up listening to A Tribe Called Quest, last Friday was like winning the lottery with the first new album in 18 years (RIP Phife). How it went down (read it here), the timing, etc. all aligned at the right moment. Don’t believe me? Have you listened to the album?! Plus Pitchfork just gave it a 9.0! Now comes the first music video for the lead single, “We The People…”
Over 600,000 spins in less than 24 hours for Kendrick Lamar’s new video for “King Kunta” off To Pimp A Butterfly which was shot in his hometown of Compton. Pair this with the release of the trailer for the N.W.A. biopic Straight Outta Compton and it’s been quite a 24 hours for the California community.
Lucky 13! Getting closer to Life is Beautiful 2014 and one of the acts I am pumped we were able to add this year is Vegas’ own, Dizzy Wright. The 23 year old rising hip-hop star is poised to be the next musician to break from the neon desert. Anyone who’s see Dizzy live can attest to his on-stage presence but it’s his lyrics that make him a champion. The 2013 XXL Freshman Class honoree raps a positive message and awareness. So far so good because the fans keep lining up to see him and you won’t want to miss his set on Sunday, October 26 on the Ambassador Stage at 3:35 p.m.
He was one of my favorite performers at Bonnaroo and now that he just signed to Glassnote Records, Childish Gambino aka Donald Glover is already dropping some new tracks. Give a listen to “Bonfire” and hear for yourself. Also I don’t know if it’s just me but at times the beat sounds like Lil Wayne’s “6 Foot 7 Foot.” Can’t wait for the album!
I can’t wait for July 19 when Spike Jonze’s video for the Beastie Boys’ “Don’t Play No Game That I Can’t Win” featuring Santigold drops; but in the meantime here’s Major Lazer’s remix of the track off Hot Sauce Committee Part Two.
Today would have been Tupac’s 40th birthday. I figured it was an appropriate time to recall one of my favorite movies of all time, Juice and the character he played, Bishop.
One of the best parts of a music festival is discovering new music and at Bonnaroo I did just that. On the first night of the festival I found myself bouncing around and after catching the end of The Walkmen’s set and waiting for Deerhunter to go on, I stumbled upon Childish Gambino and within minutes was blown away. I had absolutely zero notion of who he was or what kind of music I was preparing myself for but left craving more and while hip-hop is his game, I loved the fact that he has a kick ass band backing him. Oh yeah, Childish Gambino is the alter ego of comedian Donald Glover; a tiny bit of information you should know ;).
I may be late to this party as he’s be rapping for some years now but I’ll take a new discovery any day.
