Countdown to Bonnaroo: 12 Days – Artist of the Day: Trampled by Turtles

25 May

Talk about a buzz that won’t stop, Trampled by Turtles have been on fire this year! In addition to taking the festival world by storm, the bluegrass band made their late night TV debut earlier this spring on David Letterman. Fresh on the heels of releasing their sixth album, Stars and Satellites, which is their most grown-up work to date, Rooers will get two opportunities to see the Minnesotans show their stuff.

Countdown to Bonnaroo: 13 Days – Artist of the Day: Kenny Rogers

24 May

Lucky 13 days away from being back at Bonnaroo and what better than picturing yourself in the middle of nowhere Tennessee to see the legend himself, Kenny Rogers.  I’ll raise my hand and say I never expected I’d get the chance to see him and now I am jumping for joy at the prospect of hearing “The Gambler” live!  I know, I know he has tons of hit songs and a career that has spanned more years than I have been alive but I for one am beyond excited about hearing a song I have had stuck in my head since I was little.  And let’s be candid, at 73 years old, how many more years is he going to perform.  So on the grand stage at the best music festival in the U.S., it shall be a memory worth savoring. Now who’s hungry for some rotisserie chicken from Kenny Rogers Roasters?! J

Hot off the press: DoYouHearTheMusic.com Sticker

24 May

First came designing the logo for the blog using my old ticket stubs and well, it worked! Next was making this blog a reality and using that logo as the identifying image associated with DoYouHearTheMusic.com and now comes a little fun, the first DoYouHearTheMusic.com sticker!

Big thanks to my dear friend Jef Salazar aka the Ayatollah of Rocknrolla for designing the first DoYouHearTheMusic.com sticker!  Find me at a concert and be on the lookout for the sticker to be popping up in some “random” spots here soon.

Countdown to Bonnaroo: 14 Days – Artist of the Day: Hey Rosetta!

23 May

Say hello to another Canadian act you should be excited to check out, Hey Rosetta!. While the band has been together for more than half a dozen years and have three albums out, the Newfoundland sextuplet are a relatively new act to the States and should be primed and ready for a major breakout this summer.  With lead singer Tim Baker at the helm, Hey Rosetta! are a polished group with beautiful harmony, and boast a killer strings section (violin and cello).  So get ready for two killer live music jam sessions taking place at Bonnaroo, and come discover some new music to kick your summer into gear.

Countdown to Bonnaroo: 15 Days – Artist of the Day: Honey Island Swamp Band

22 May

When day four at Bonnaroo rolls around and you hear a party going on at The Great Taste Lounge stage, that will be the sweet sound of New Orleans courtesy of the Honey Island Swamp Band.  While there are more than enough terrible memories of Hurricane Katrina, we are starting to hear about more and more wins, successes and revitalization as a result and one is definitely Honey Island Swamp Band.  With a chance encounter in San Francisco after evacuating New Orleans, the band was formed, gigs were nailed down and record was released.  Since, the band has returned to New Orleans and continues to put smiles on people’s faces and lead funky dance parties.  If you’re down to discover some new music I highly recommend you take a leap and listen to these rockers and start your own little get down jam session.

Countdown to Bonnaroo: 16 Days – Artist of the Day: Caitlin Rose

21 May

One, I was completely enamored the first time I listened to Caitlin Rose and two, I will be the first to tell you I don’t listen to country music often.  And yet, I find myself excited to check out her performance on Friday afternoon at Bonnaroo.  The Nashville artist has and very soothing voice and easy going sound that is contagious.  Plus every time I listen “Shanghai Cigarettes” I swear I hear the female version of Ryan Bingham.  Maybe it’s just me but now I’m just imagining what it might be like to hear these two artists collaborate together.

Countdown to Bonnaroo: 17 Days – Artist of the Day: Feist

20 May

“One, two, three, four…” yeah that’s how I like pretty much everyone first heard of Feist.  And I think we can all thank Apple and that iPod commercial for delivering a gifted singer-songwriter to us. But before that, Leslie Feist already had one heck of a career spanning multiple bands (including Broken Social Scene) and albums.  After disappearing from music for a couple of years, fast forward to present where she is back and out on a world tour supporting her most recent album, Metals, which was released towards the end of 2011.   With a prime time slot on Friday at Bonnaroo, her set should be a stellar one and is also one of her last U.S. dates on the current tour.

Countdown to Bonnaroo: 18 Days – Artist of the Day: Mac Miller

19 May

Let me tell you about my fascination with Mac Miller.  I’ll be completely candid and admit I’ve never listened to the hip-hop wiz kid and yet he is one of the acts I am most excited to see at Bonnaroo.  Why?  As an independent artist you don’t just move 144,000 copies and appear at #1 on the Billboard Chart when your debut album is released; especially in a day and age when CDs are not selling (you may want to check out the millions of YouTube hits his songs have gotten too).  I want to see what he is all about and why Blue Slide Park became a chart topper.  I would think that Bonnaroo is the going to be the biggest stage the 20-year old has played to date and I want to see him crush it. Heck I want to like him and know that this acclaim is warranted.

Countdown to Bonnaroo: 19 Days – Artist of the Day: The Dirty Guv’nahs

18 May

Do you ever hear a band and wonder how does it seem practically no one outside where they are from know who they are?  I still can’t even remember how I came across The Dirty Guv’nahs but what I can tell you is I am damn glad I did and I want to know why the rest of the world doesn’t know about this incredibly talented band from Tennessee.  Last year on the way to Bonnaroo I was listening to them nonstop even though they weren’t going to be there and well now a little wish has been granted to me.  All you have to do is listen to “Baby We Were Young” and “We’ll Be The Light” to understand what you’ve been missing out on.  And flat out, if you like southern rock and roll, The Guvs are for you!

Countdown to Bonnaroo: 20 Days – Artist of the Day: Charles Bradley

17 May

Yesterday it was about one of the next great soul singers and today it’s about a seasoned vet just being discovered and unleashed to the world, “The Screaming Eagle of Soul,” Mr. Charles Bradley.  Last year he dropped No Time For Dreaming, an album that drew national acclaim and it was well warranted. Having moonlighted as a James Brown impersonator, Bradley has soul in his veins and has made a name for himself after years of being, well, undiscovered.  Performing under his name and the moniker, “Black Velvet,” Bradley should bring a little funk to the party in Tennessee this summer.  Another artist festival goers should be excited to check out.  Viva Bonnaroo!!
