New Music: Boy & Bear

18 Jul

I swear there seems to be more and more great music coming out of Australia and Boy & Bear are the latest such group.  After putting out a rocking EP, Emperor Antarctica, and spending some time touring with Mumford & Sons, the five-piece folk group are getting set to release their first full length record, Moon Fire next month.  If the more upbeat, “Feeding Line” is any indication, this could shoot right up as one of the top albums of 2011.  I haven’t heard the CD but from this single and their previous EP, these fellas have a bright future ahead of themselves.  Lucky for us in the States, they are playing Lollapalooza in a couple weeks (followed by two NYC shows)!  Give a listen and judge for yourself.  And if at first listen you start thinking it sounds a little Brandon Flowers/The Killers-ish, you’re not alone.

New Music: O.A.R. – “Taking On The World Today”

7 Jul

Less than a month until O.A.R. releases King and August 2 can’t come soon enough.  Here’s another track off the upcoming album, “Taking On The World Today” which has now become my latest music obsession.  I also listened to the live version the band played at the Dave Matthews Band Caravan a couple weeks ago in Atlantic City and yeah, WINNER!

New Music: To Kill A King

6 Jul

Another band from across the pond that has grabbed my attention is To Kill A King.  There is not much to go off of right now but the folk-rock quintuplet from London do have a single out, “Fictional State.”  Give a listen.

New Music: Sublime with Rome ft. Wiz Khalifa – “Can You Feel It”

29 Jun

Putting the finishing touches on what should be a killer summer playlist and I figure why not tease it a little with this new track, “Can You Feel It” from Sublime with Rome featuring Wiz Khalifa. Also Sublime with Rome are getting set to drop their album Yours Truly, July 12.

New Music: GROUPLOVE

28 Jun

Another band I’ve been getting into recently and perfect for summer is GROUPLOVE.  Based out of LA but formed out of one wild musical summer on the island of Crete, members hail from Brooklyn, Los Angeles and London.  From the first listen to their self titled EP it was as if I was already familiar with the sound and heard these songs before.  Each of the six-tracks on the EP present a dynamic indie-rock and pop sound with crisp guitars, solid drums and sheer joy but it is Christian Zucconi’s vocals that stand out and impress me the most.  I still can’t pin his voice to who it reminds me of exactly but it captivates you (perhaps a blend of Todd Shaeffer of From Good Homes and Issac Brock of Modest Mouse?).

Fresh off playing the legendary Glastonbury Festival, GROUPLOVE, are touring outside the states but return for gigs at Lollapalooza and Outside Lands this summer.  If you’re going to one or both, don’t miss their show; you’ll want to see them before their debut release, Never Trust A Happy Song, drops this September.

New Music: Cults

27 Jun

The last few weeks I have been giving Cults‘ self titled album a bunch of spins and it keeps growing on me more and more. The Brooklyn duo have a retro indie-pop sound that is very soothing and perfect chill disc for the summer. Want another reason to listen, they are going on tour with Foster The People this fall.

New Music: Mazes – “Summer Hits”

The latest band from across the pond I’m digging these days, Mazes.  Straight from their debut album A Thousand Heys comes the release today of their single “Summer Hits.”  Give a listen and maybe this will make it onto your summer playlist. Also check them out on tour in the States this summer with White Denim!

New Music: The Apache Relay

17 Jun

A band I recently started listening to and also had the opportunity to see live at Bonnaroo was The Apache Relay.  The roots-rock quartet hailing from Nashville, Tennessee is a band everyone needs to check out, especially if you are a fan of The Avett Brothers, John Butler Trio and The Boss, Bruce Springsteen.  On their latest record, American Nomad, the band’s energetic grooves and vocals of Michael Ford Jr. come together to unleash a sound that is contagious from start to finish; bouncing between soft, melodic sing-alongs and upbeat jams.  I will also say that while I dig the disc, seeing them live is where it’s at.

And one more reason to love and listen to The Apache Relay, they have already been on the road with one of my favorite artists, G. Love.

New Music: Childish Gambino

16 Jun

One of the best parts of a music festival is discovering new music and at Bonnaroo I did just that.  On the first night of the festival I found myself bouncing around and after catching the end of The Walkmen’s set and waiting for Deerhunter to go on, I stumbled upon Childish Gambino and within minutes was blown away.  I had absolutely zero notion of who he was or what kind of music I was preparing myself for but left craving more and while hip-hop is his game, I loved the fact that he has a kick ass band backing him.  Oh yeah, Childish Gambino is the alter ego of comedian Donald Glover; a tiny bit of information you should know ;).

I may be late to this party as he’s be rapping for some years now but I’ll take a new discovery any day.

Video: GIVERS on Jimmy Fallon Last Night

14 Jun

GIVERS fresh from Bonnaroo made their television debut last night on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon and performed “Up Up Up” check it out here.

Since that may be a little much on advertisements to wait through, check out this clip of them performing at Bonnaroo!

If you haven’t read earlier posts on the blog, this is hands down on of the bands I’m most excited about these days.
