R.I.P. Sir George Martin

9 Mar

2016 continues to be a year of mourning in the music industry and this one, personally hits hard as Sir George Martin has passed away at the age of 90. The “fifth Beatle” as he was widely referred to died “peacefully at home” according to reports. The producer of the Beatles and the man who helped bring their sound to life was a pure genius and regarded as one of the finest and most intelligent people in the business. I encourage you to take some time today to learn a bit more about Sir George Martin and the impact he’s had over his lifetime.

For me it obviously began with my parents playing The Beatles music growing up and continuously being surrounded by it. Then it was 10 years ago in Las Vegas when Cirque du Soleil announced a collaboration for The Beatles LOVE by Cirque du Soleil and having a chance to sit through dress rehearsals and media days (I was assisting on the PR end as the company I worked for handled PR for Cirque) and listen to how the soundtrack for the show came together and how Sir George Martin worked with his son Giles to put together one of the most incredible arrangements I had ever heard. This was also the time when Apple Corps didn’t own the original catalog of The Beatles’ music, Michael Jackson did and so the two Martin’s were using outtakes, other recordings, etc. and still delivered an amazing 90 minutes of music for Cirque du Soleil to perform with. Then in 2014 I had a crazy idea, could I bring together my favorite show, The Beatles LOVE by Cirque du Soleil and the Las Vegas Philharmonic Orchestra for a first time performance at Life is Beautiful? This wild pipe dream became a reality thanks to Giles Martin and the team at Cirque du Soleil and of course the LV Phil. Giles rewrote the score for this 30 minute performance and it was an incredible moment and one that I will never forget.

We lost a legend. A man who not only changed the way we listened and fell in love with music but also a man who was regarded as one of the best. We lost a Beatle today. May you rest in peace Sir George Martin.

Hands down one of the most amazing work opportunities I’ve ever had was getting a chance to bring The Beatles LOVE by Cirque du Soleil and members of the Las Vegas Philharmonic together for an incredible once in a lifetime performance at Life is Beautiful 2014. I could write for days all about the people who worked tirelessly on this project but I’ll do you one better; Thanks to the wonderful team at Cirque du Soleil, you can catch a glimpse of what went into making a crazy idea I had come to life for thousands to witness. If you were there you know what an unbelievable moment this was. If you weren’t, I hope this video paints a picture of what it was like on a lovely Sunday afternoon in Downtown Las Vegas. Life truly is Beautiful! Peace + Love + Music!

The Beatles LOVE by Cirque du Soleil performed with members of The Las Vegas Philharmonic at Life is Beautiful. Members of The Las Vegas Philharmonic performed a 40-minute tribute to The Beatles, playing original scores adapted specifically for Life is Beautiful under the guidance of The Beatles LOVE Music Director Giles Martin. The set included a captivating performance from LOVE featuring more than 50 dancers and aerialists from its resident production at The Mirage in Las Vegas. Here’s an inside look at how Giles Martin, and the Las Vegas Philharmonic collaborated to create this one-of-a-kind showcase.

Countdown to Life is Beautiful 2014: Las Vegas Philharmonic & The Beatles LOVE by Cirque du Soleil perform a Tribute to The Beatles

7 Oct

17 days until the second Life is Beautiful festival in Downtown Las Vegas, October 24-26! If you haven’t gotten your tickets, do so at www.lifeisbeautiful.com and if you have, awesome and I can’t wait to see you!

If there is one performance you can’t miss, it’s this one. I’ m talking about legendary, one time only performance.  In honor of The Beatles’ 50th Anniversary of coming to Las Vegas, I’ve gotten the Las Vegas Philharmonic Orchestra and The Beatles LOVE by Cirque du Soleil to join forces for a 40 minute tribute to the Fab Four.  It’s going to break down like this, on Sunday afternoon you are going to want to make your way to the main stage where the Las Vegas Philharmonic Orchestra will perform a 20 minute solo set of Beatles songs before being joined on stage by the cast of LOVE for an incredible performance of acrobatics and dancers meets symphony. Yes you read that correct, this is all going to happen at once, Cirque du Soleil cast members will be flying, Beatles music will be playing and you as a spectators are going to witness an incredible never before seen show.

If I could begin to explain how excited all parties involved are, you wouldn’t believe me.  Everyone is pouring their blood, sweat and tears into this performance and I promise you this is going to be legendary.

Me personally, this performance is the coolest thing I’ve ever had the opportunity to work on. And yes, I realize I work for a festival so I’m not joking when I say how amazing this opportunity is.  Not only is LOVE my favorite show in Las Vegas, I clearly am a fan of The Beatles, Giles Martin working on the arrangement for this performance is just WOW and the opportunity to work with the Philharmonic is such an incredible one (these musicians are uber talented and hearing them in rehearsals gave me chills);  this  magical in so many ways.

Want to read a little more, check out this article from my buddy John Katsilometes who interviewed the great, Giles Martin about the upcoming performance and arranging the music specifically for this show.
