Countdown to Lollapalooza: 3 Days – Muse

2 Aug

Friday, Aug. 5 – Music Unlimited Stage, 8:15 p.m.

So Muse plays at the same time as Coldplay which should split the festival goers 50/50 if I was to guess but for me the decision is easy, Muse all the way. While it would be great to see Coldplay, I just can’t pass up the opportunity to see Muse let alone perform at a massive festival. I have also heard their live shows are intense. Guess we’ll find out in a few short days!

Countdown to Lollapalooza: 4 Days – Ween

1 Aug

Saturday, Aug. 6 – Bud Light Stage, 6:00 p.m.

There are so many great bands to choose from and while ultimately scheduling is going to shatter my dreams of seeing every band I’ve marked on my line-up, Ween has to be one of the top priorities. They’ve been around a while and I still have not ever seen Ween live. Time to change this.

Countdown to Lollapalooza: 5 Days – Boy & Bear

31 Jul

Sunday, Aug. 7 – BMI Stage, 5:00 p.m.

Boy & Bear, I can’t get enough of this band.  Beyond stoked to see the kids from Down Under bring it in front of a huge crowd in Chicago.  I wrote about them a couple weeks ago and featured their single “Feeding Line” off their upcoming debut album Moon Fire which get this, drops August 5 (August 9 in the states) when Lollapalooza begins.  How’s that for a way to celebrate!

Countdown to Lollapalooza: 6 Days – Two Door Cinema Club

30 Jul

Friday, Aug. 5, Sony Stage, 5:00 p.m.

Another band I’ve been dying to see live, Two Door Cinema Club.  I love their indie-pop/electro/rock combination.  From their thieving guitar sound and Alex Trimble’s vocals, you just have to say to yourself, ‘wow.’

Not that this should be what you base it on but TDCC are part of the incredible growing line-up on Glassnote Records (Phoenix, Mumford & Sons, GIVERS, Temper Trap, etc.), not bad company for the Irish Trio to be associated with.

Countdown to Lollapalooza: 7 Days – Walk The Moon

29 Jul

Saturday, Aug. 6, Music Unlimited Stage, 12:45 p.m.

This is one show you’ll want to get to the festival early for.  Hands down one of the top performances at Bonnaroo earlier this summer, Walk The Moon, put on an energetic, electric set from start to finish. Riding high on the release of i want! i want! and the lead single “Anna Sun,” the quartet from Ohio are primed and ready to break it big.

And get the face paint ready (you’ll figure it out!).

Countdown to Lollapalooza: 8 Days – The Joy Formidable

28 Jul

Sunday, Aug. 7, Bud Light Stage, 1:00 p.m.

Another rising act in the States that I’m excited to see, The Joy Formidable. The Welsh trio tore up SXSW earlier this year and if all the hype I’ve heard surrounding their live shows is true, they should do the same at Lollapalooza.

Countdown to Lollapalooza: 9 Days – Portugal. The Man

27 Jul

Now that we are single digit days away from the 20th Anniversary of Lollapalooza I’m going to highlight some artists I’m excited to see and try to keep it different from artists who were on the Bonnaroo countdown but that may be a little too hard with a few of them.

Here’s “Got It All (This Can’t Be Living Now)” by Portugal. The Man off the new record In the Mountain in the Cloud.

New Music: Boy & Bear

18 Jul

I swear there seems to be more and more great music coming out of Australia and Boy & Bear are the latest such group.  After putting out a rocking EP, Emperor Antarctica, and spending some time touring with Mumford & Sons, the five-piece folk group are getting set to release their first full length record, Moon Fire next month.  If the more upbeat, “Feeding Line” is any indication, this could shoot right up as one of the top albums of 2011.  I haven’t heard the CD but from this single and their previous EP, these fellas have a bright future ahead of themselves.  Lucky for us in the States, they are playing Lollapalooza in a couple weeks (followed by two NYC shows)!  Give a listen and judge for yourself.  And if at first listen you start thinking it sounds a little Brandon Flowers/The Killers-ish, you’re not alone.

Now Playing: Dave Matthews Band – “Stay”

8 Jul

One of my favorite songs in honor of the DMB Caravan kicking off in Chicago today. Oh how I wish I was there.

Countdown to Bonnaroo: 27 Days – Artist of the Day: Smith Westerns

13 May

Smith Westerns was a complete surprise to me as part of the line-up but I’m thrilled they will be performing.  Fresh off the heels of their second release, Dye It Blonde, the Chicago group has been gaining steam all throughout 2011.  As we wrote about back in back in January, with an upbeat retro rock and pop sound (think 60s and glam rock eras), they kill it with whinny guitar riffs and not complex lyrics.

Their set is scheduled for Sunday, June 12 at 12:30 p.m. – 1:30 p.m.
