New Music: Chiddy Bang – “Ray Charles”

7 Jan

Just released, the video for “Ray Charles” from Chiddy Bang off their upcoming album Breakfast. In my book even more exciting news is the duo will be performing this song with The Roots on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon January 16. Get the DVR set, this should be a performance not to miss.

Now Playing: Avalanche City – “Love Love Love”

6 Jan

TGIF and time to start the day off right with “Love Love Love” by Avalanche City off their album Our New Life Above The Ground.  Even more exciting, the Kiwis are coming stateside this spring as one of the bands lined up to perform at SXSW.

Now Playing: U.S. Royalty

29 Dec

In what is looking like my final post of 2011, why not go out with a bang.  I had posted about them earlier in the year performing at the Sweetlife Festival but never really gave a listen until recently and boy was that a big mistake.  I am now finding myself enamored with Washington D.C. indie rock band, U.S. Royalty.  Their album Mirrors has been on repeat for much of December (hey, better late than never) and I can’t see how these guys aren’t going to be one of the next big rock bands.  From sweet harmonies to gritty and pretty guitars, U.S. Royalty is captivating and their album will definitely take you for a ride. It’s one of those discs that keeps getting better and better as you get deeper in it.

I may be the only one who views it this way but if you took a little Ryan Adams, The Strokes and Band of Horses, a touch of The Black Keys and Kings of Leon, splash in some classic rock from all over the 70 (you can hear Fleetwood Mac on “Monte Carlo” below) and of course the indie rock sound of today, you get an incredible sound that is U.S. Royalty.

So there you have it, one last nugget of good music to wrap 2011.  Hope you enjoy as much as I do.

Now Playing: Tallahassee – Swimming Song (Loudon Wainwright cover)

27 Dec

First and foremost you all need to check out the band, Tallahassee.  Hailing from Boston, the quartet led by former NFL player Brian Barthelmes are a nice slice of Americana and a band you need to know now.  Their debut album Jealous Hands was released in the spring but here is a cover of  Loudon Wainwright’s “Swimming Song’ which I currently can’t get enough of.  Enjoy!

Now Playing: The Knocks – Brightside (’96 Bulls Remix)

22 Dec

First of all, I love the name, ’96 Bulls. Secondly, that team was insanely amazing and third but most important, this remix from the Australian duo is dope and if it were summer in the States like it is down under, I’d be listening to this nonstop as well.

Happy Birthday Jimi Hendrix

27 Nov

James Marshall Hendrix, today would have been his 69th birthday. I’m guessing I’m like many and have a list of artists/bands I wish I could have seen perform live but there is nobody on that list higher than Jimi Hendrix.  The greatest guitarist of all time, what a treat it would have been to get a glimpse of the man and the music many of us have grown up listening to and hearing tales of.

Now Playing: AWOLNATION – “Guilty Flithy Soul”

18 Nov

TGIF.  Get out and enjoy the weekend.  A little AWOLNATION to kick it off.

Now Playing: Gringo Star – “Light In The Sky”

17 Nov

Another band I’m really jamming to these past few weeks is Gringo Star. The Atlanta quartet are back with their sophomore effort, Count Yer Lucky Stars, which was released last month.  It may take you a couple listens of the album to get into these guys but you should find a little bit of southern rock n roll-psychedelic tunes perfect to get you through the day.  Here’s what I think is one of the top tracks off the album, “Light in the Sky.”

Now Playing: Alabama Shakes

16 Nov

The train is coming and you better hop on board before you miss this group, the Alabama Shakes.   Currently their four-song EP is available and it’s one you should definitely add to your collection.  If you like multiple genres rolled into one (R&B, Soul, Rock, etc.), you’ll be a fan of this rising band.  Plus I can’t get enough of Brittany Howard’s voice; she has soul running through her and an old school feel reminiscent of some female vocalists from the 60s.  The only sad thing is I don’t know when I’ll have a chance to see them live.  Here’s hoping for a trip out west, Las Vegas would be nice!

On a random note, it may be just me but the opening chords on “Hold On” have me thinking it’s a take on CCR’s “Down on the Corner.” I could be way off but that’s what I hear.
