Now Playing: Jimmy Fallon & The Roots w/Carly Rae Jepsen – “Call Me Maybe” (w/Classroom Instruments)

17 Jun

I love The Roots and I love Jimmy Fallon so naturally any music collaboration they dream up I am all about. Even with shenanigans like this, recording “Call Me Maybe” with it girl of the moment, Carly Rae Jepsen. The Late Night-ers used grade school instruments for this rendition and I have to say, it’s pretty amazing (how’s 3.3 million views in under 10 days?!). Just look at the facial reactions from The Roots (especially Black Thought), this is priceless. Once again Jimmy Fallon, take a bow – the Late Night King of today!

Countdown to Bonnaroo: Today is the day!!!

7 Jun

Bonnaroo, Bonnaroo,Bonnaroo

Feel The magic in the air,Bonnaroo

Bonnaroo, Bonnaroo,Bonnaroo

Feel the magic everywhere, Bonnaroo

You can feel the magic in the air

They’re havin’ a good time

Counting down the milesbefore we cross

That state line to lose these blues

Bonnaroo me and you Tennessee Bonnaroo

Just as the lyrics to “Bonnaroo (Feel The Magic)” there is nothing else that can describe today better.  The next four days are going to be filled with music, arts, great people and ever lasting memories.  Chances are the blog is going radio silent for the next four days but maybe there will be a surprise post here and there.  Catch you on the flip side!

Here’s last year, no fun at all!

Countdown to Bonnaroo: 1 Day – Artist of the Day: Dispatch

6 Jun

Why is Dispatch my choice for this slot? Simple, I never thought I’d have the opportunity to see one of my favorite bands live.  When they broke up I was crushed as a music fan and having not seen them live before.  When the announcement came they had reunited and were going back on tour last year, I was elated. And now I will finally have the chance to see the fellas live; everything else going on at the festival stops for me when Dispatch takes the stage.

To tell you the impact this band has had on my generation, Dispatch recorded a documentary “The Last Dispatch” to turn the final two shows into a DVD/CD.  Expecting 10,000-30,000 fans, 110,000 showed up! That doesn’t just happen!  Three guys from the east coast redefined independent music and a legion of fans followed.  There were a few one off shows here and there (MSG, look it up) and each had side projects but nothing can signify what it means (at least to me) how thankful and happy I am to see this band back together.

Now on the biggest stage, Dispatch, will bring that musical joy and I hope everyone comes over to hear this special show.

Countdown to Bonnaroo: 2 Days – Artist of the Day: Phish

5 Jun

I think everyone would agree that Phish has played a monumental role in both the music industry and festival circuit, and with a legion of fans all over the globe, it should be quite the special performance closing out Bonnaroo XI.  Slated to play two sets, it should be four hours of bliss on the farm as the festival comes to a close for another year.

I remember the first time seeing Phish was in 1996 at America West Arena in Phoenix (part of my DoYouHeartheMusic.com ticket stub background image) and how excited I was to finally see them live.  The last Phish show I saw was a decade ago, way too long but what is also making seeing them at Bonnaroo that much more special for me.

Countdown to Bonnaroo: 3 Days – Artist of the Day: Alabama Shakes

4 Jun

Back in November 2011 I stumbled upon the Alabama Shakes and was completely overwhelmed with what to me is one of the greatest voices I have heard in my 30 years of existence.  Brittany Howard had me from the first note she sang.  It was like she was channeling a sound that has been missing from rock and roll for decades and Muscle Shoals received a revival as unexpected and welcomed with open arms.  Every chance I got I was rushing to tell anyone, “you’ve got to hear this band, your mind is going to be blown” and since I’m happy to gloat a little to being on the blog prior to MTV and Rolling Stone, and they have become the talk of the business, garnering well deserved national attention (SXSW appearances pushed them over the top) while releasing their debut album, Boys & Girls.

While there is no “headline act” at Bonnaroo on Thursday night, you may as well give that honor to the Alabama Shakes and their 11:30 p.m. slot in This Tent. No disrespect to any of the other super talented acts performing at the same time (Glossary for one), but this is where everyone should be.  Get ready to rock your faces off with one of the best out there today.

Countdown to Bonnaroo: 4 Days – Artist of the Day: GROUPLOVE

3 Jun

You ever come across a band and just know they are destined to be stars?  Shortly after Bonnaroo last year I discovered GROUPLOVE and have been hooked and a supporter ever since.  Not only do they have one incredible story of coming together but their music is truly some of the best out there and for their debut album, it’s insanely good. Since rocking Lollapalooza last year, releasing their debut album Never Trust A Happy Song, appearing on Conan and blowing him away, destroying Coachella this year, and more, these kids are on fire and only garnering more acclaim.  If you want to see what chemistry on stage is like, all you have to do is watch GROUPLOVE perform and you’ll understand.  Their happy-go-lucky spirit is contagious and their set will most definitely be one of the best at Bonnaroo this summer.

Now Playing: Martin Solveig “The Night Out” Full Band Version

1 Jun

Martin Solveig dropped “The Night Out” which Madeon then remixed and in turn, Martin Solveig has now taken that remix and recorded the version with a live band!  Simply AMAZING.  Listen for yourself.  Big shout out to my friend Natalie for peeping this first.

Countdown to Bonnaroo: 6 Days – Artist of the Day: The Roots

31 May

The Roots Crew where you at?! If you’ve never seen The Roots live (and as much as I love them as the house band on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, that does not count), you will not want to miss this performance.  This show will push me into double digit Roots shows and I wish I could say I have been to more.  Each and every time I see The Roots, the shows get better. They are filled with sweet music, infinite energy and flat out what a dance party should be, nonstop from beginning to end.

While some members have come and gone (Scott Storch, Rahzel), ?uestlove and Black Thought have been at the forefront and continuously produce some of the best music around (just listen to their collaboration Betty Wright & The Roots which was nominated for a GRAMMY earlier this year).  And besides their original works, nobody does it better than The Roots when it comes to a marathon melody session running the gamut on songs from every genre.  Add in ?uestlove leading Superjam and whoa, it’s going to be a special one on the farm.  And since it’s Bonnaroo and traditionally there are some surprises, I personally would love to see Cody Chesnutt appear for “The Seed.”  Probably won’t happen but I can dream.

Countdown to Bonnaroo: 7 Days – Artist of the Day: ALO

30 May

I love ALO, plain and simple.  Their live shows are some of the most entertaining rock concerts around and with Zach Gill at the helm; you never know what may happen.  What’s even more exciting for anyone attending Bonnaroo, you will have not one, but THREE chances to see this incredibly talented band!

If you’re a Jack Johnson fan you should already be familiar with ALO and most likely are a big fan like I am.  If you’ve ever heard the song “Girl, I Wanna Lay You Down,” you should do a little more listening to find there are a ton of great songs just like that one from the quartet.  Personally if you are just getting into ALO I suggest listening to Roses & Clover.

Countdown to Bonnaroo: 8 Days – Artist of the Day: Red Hot Chili Peppers

29 May

Newly minted Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees, the Red Hot Chili Peppers are not only riding the high of being honored as music royalty but also as the grandioso 2012 festival headliner, and well deserved.  I’ve been to a ton of concerts in my lifetime and I’ll continue to remember seeing RHCP live and what a fun show it was.  RHCP are one of those bands that every song they play is a hit that you’ve been listening to for years.  The only thing I expect is everything to be bigger and better on the big stage of Bonnaroo.  Night two is going to be awesome!
