A couple days ago M.I.A. resurfaced and posted a brand new track “CanSeeCanDo” to her Soundcloud and tweeted a message to fans “to my hardcore fans hang in there summer is coming” which one can only guess more new music! If you haven’t listened already, click play below.
NEWS: via @NYTimes: Tweets About Music to Get a Billboard Chart
27 MarYes, you read that headline correct, music tweets are about to get their own Billboard chart.
You can read the entire New York Times article HERE but essentially Billboard and Twitter are joining forces to gather real time content of all the music chatter.
“On Thursday, the two companies will announce a deal to create the Billboard Twitter Real-Time Charts: continuously updated lists of the music that are being talked about and shared on Twitter in the United States. The charts, to be published on Billboard.com and through the publication’s Twitter feed, are expected to be introduced in May.”
“For Twitter the partnership is also a chance to prove its value to the music business after the failed experiment of the #Music app. Bob Moczydlowsky, the company’s head of music, called the Billboard partnership “part of an ongoing effort to make Twitter the universal signal of real-time music measurement.””
What I really think about Live Nation pulling the plug on Springsteen/McCartney
16 JulBruce Springsteen and Paul McCartney jamming together; what I would have done to have been there and witness a collaboration that 80,000 fans at Hard Rock Calling in London were privileged to. Too bad it was marred by the unfortunate stance taken by festival organizers and authorities.
I saw it over the weekend, tweeted it a couple times as soon as I saw it but wasn’t really going to blog post about it until I realized that I need to vent a little bit.
This is a perfect example of some of what’s wrong with so many things today. And yes, I know I’m referencing music but you know what, this is the universal language that speaks and unites strangers all over the world.
You went over curfew, so what. It’s a music festival and you have two of the greatest entertainers to ever exist sharing a stage and giving fans one of the most magical and memorable performances to date. Live Nation, take the fine and pay it, make a statement apologizing for going over but don’t deprive the world of seeing improvisation at its finest take place. And it’s not like we are taking about anyone, we’re taking SIR Paul McCartney (oh and how do you not put in place a buffer for Springsteen when he is known for his marathon concerts). For a destination where the spotlight will be shining bright with the summer Olympics about to take place, way to give yourself a self inflicted black eye leading up to it.
Also I love this, Springsteen guitarist Stevie Van Zandt quotes from The Guardian:
But Van Zandt, who also starred in the US drama series The Sopranos, turned to Twitter in rage. In a series of tweets from StevieVanZandt, he said: “One of the great gigs ever in my opinion. But seriously, when did England become a police state?
“We break curfews in every country but only English cops needs to ‘punish us’ by not letting us leave until the entire crowd goes. Is there just too much fun in the world? We would have been off by 11 if we’d done one more. On a Saturday night! Who were we disturbing?” he asked.
“The cops got nothing more important to do? How about they go catch some criminals instead of fucking with 80,000 people having a good time? English cops may be the only individuals left on earth that wouldn’t want to hear one more from Bruce Springsteen and Paul McCartney!
“I’m sorry but I have to be honest I’m pissed. Like I said, it didn’t ruin the great night. But when I’m jamming with McCartney don’t bug me!”
Van Zandt also compared the occasion to the last live Beatles performance in 1969 on the roof of their Apple record company offices in London’s Savile Row. It was cut short by police. “Ha! @raindogs70 just reminded me how the Beatles’ rooftop concert ended. Not much has changed in 43 years!”
All of this reminds me of the movie Pirate Radio (The Boat That Rocked for those of you in the UK) and how Government wanted to shut down rock and roll. Looks like things really haven’t changed…..
@MayerHawthorne Wants to Replace Nickelback in the Lions’ Halftime Show
9 NovHa! This is awesome and I sure hope it happens. Mayer Hawthorne campaigning to replace Nickelback as the Thanksgiving Day halftime performer during the annual Turkey Bowl in Detroit where he just so happens to be from (well Ann Arbor). I mean how can you have a Canadian band play Thanksgiving in the United States? If they were playing halftime of a CFL game during Thanksgiving in Canada, okay, totally fine. Better question may be, who’s bright idea was it to book Nickelback for this in the first place?
Check out THIS article from PASTE Magazine with the campaign video from Mayer himself.
If you decide to get in the campaign spirit, tweet @MayerHawthrone and use the hash tag #MayerForDetroit.
Revisited: Coachella 2011 via @IMWITHTHEDEEJAY
22 AprIt’s a great day as a good friend of mine and fellow music lover, Angela (@IMWITHTHEDEEJAY), becomes the first guest blogger on Do You Hear The Music and shares her first Coachella experience in words and video. Angela has one of the coolest blogs I’ve come across and always has fun, interesting and inspiring posts as well as the latest and greatest from DJ Vice. Check out the below and then visit her blog and follow her on Twitter.
Coachella 2011.
I’m no stranger to packed crowds, pounding beats and rhythmic drum patterns and quite candidly house music, nightlife and large crowds make me feel at home; so much so it’s why I started my blog, rightfully titled: IMWITHTHEDEEJAY. No further explanation needed.
Going to Coachella for the first time alongside DJ VICE proved to me that this festival truly has something for everyone. I was quite surprised just how many DJ sets were scheduled during the weekend line-up and thus spent a lot of time checking them out.
What impressed me the most about Coachella was the variety of music ranging from indie, house and dub step to R&B and hip-hop. I learned about some new artists, such as Leftfield, while also appreciating artists I was already familiar with even more after hearing their songs live combined with their stage presence (Chromeo, The Strokes, Cut Copy).
Here is a short video I put together to share some of the highlights on my experience and exactly why I plan to go back every year. Enjoy.
My Best and Worst of Coachella 2011
best surprise moment : Usher & Paul McCartney on stage during AfroJack’s house set
worst moment : the moment I felt the urge to pee & knew I was going to hold it ALL night! Yuck on portable bathrooms.
best performance to dance to : Cut Copy & Chromeo
best performance to jump for : AfroJack
best performance overall : Kanye West
best songs: “Original” Leftfield, “Needy Girl” Chromeo, Swedish House Mafia “Save the World”
most overused house song : “Awooga” Calvin Harris
most disappointing performance : Tinie Tempah
best fashion piece I saw : crochet white fringe vest with white glowsticks tied to each piece.
worst fashion: going barefoot
best overall: the great choice in music – you can’t even manage to hear everyone you would like to because there are so many stages & performances.
worst overall: DUST = allergies, scratchy eyes, watery nose and a layer of film all over you.
Don’t bring next year: Any “professional” DSLR camera – they won’t let you in with it.
Pack next year : bandana & anything glow in the dark!
