Video: The Lumineers do Saturday Night Live

21 Jan

In case you missed it, check out The Lumineers performing on Saturday Night Live this past weekend. They absolutely killed it!  Thrilled to see that they are continuing to rise (album is in Billboard Top 10) and that “Stubborn Love” is finally getting the airplay and attention it deserves.  Nearly a year ago I first featured them on the blog and here we are just a few weeks away from seeing if they can take home a GRAMMY Award!

Now Playing: Shovels & Rope – “Birmingham”

4 Jan

Happy Friday! The first one of 2013 so why not put a little new music in your ears, Shovels & Rope. The duo of Michael Trent and Cary Ann Hearst just opened for The Lumineers on NYE in Denver and I gather you’re going to see them appear on a bunch of festival lineups this year (just added yesterday to Wakarusa). Their debut album O’ Be Joyful dropped in July of 2012 and is a diamond in the rough if you haven’t discovered it already. Plus since they are part of Dualtone Music Group, expect only good things to come for these two.

Five For Friday: Rolling Stones, The Lumineers, Bob Dylan, Gary Clark Jr. and Ghost Beach

26 Oct

TGIF!  Back with a new Five For Friday to get you through the weekend.

  1. If you didn’t see it yesterday, check out my post about the Rolling Stones surprise show in Paris yesterday where fans got to snag tickets for $20.  Oh what I would have done to see that show!  Fingers crossed I can find a way to get tickets for the shows in Jersey in December.
  2. Did you catch The Lumineers on Letterman earlier this week?  Rolling Stone said the band “shined” but as much as I love the band, I have to say I was disappointed.  Didn’t like the sound on this one.
  3. This weekend I get to see Bob Dylan in concert.  Been quite a while since my last Dylan show and perhaps this may be the last.  Either way, should be interesting and I’m going to relish every second of it.
  4. Gary Clark Jr.’s album Blak and Blu is awesome and you all need to listen to it pronto.
  5. Fall is in full swing but you don’t have to be.  Here’s a song to brighten up your day from Ghost Beach – “Miracle” Viceroy remix.

My New Music: Family of the Year

22 Aug

Wow, I can’t believe I haven’t put these guys below on the blog after their album has been on repeat for me the past month plus.  Without further adieu, your music for today.

Four words: Family of the Year

Who? A four-piece indie outfit from LA with ties to different parts of the country and across the pond.

What?  A kickass, highly talented band throwing you a bit of indie-rock and pop, folk, island vibes and more in a way that works and will have you hand clapping and boot stomping in no time.

Why you should listen? Just play their new album, Loma Vista, and you’ll understand exactly why.

A reason you’ll be excited?  If you like GROUPLOVE, you’re going to really dig these guys as they feature an array of vocals and variety of instruments to craft a fun, uplifting sound.

Why I’m excited: This band has been around since 2009 but I only recently discovered them and can’t wait to dive into earlier works but am more impressed with their most recent album which is seriously on repeat a few times a week.

If you like: GROUPLOVE, The Belle Brigade, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, The Lumineers, GIVERS.

Final thoughts: It’s just some damn good music so listen up.

New Music – Lollapalooza Edition: Milo Greene

31 Jul

Lollapalooza Week on DoYouHearTheMusic.com continues with another rising act you should most definitely be listening to.

Two words: Milo Greene

Who? Not just one person as you may imagine (and some people really thought) but rather a five-piece band from Southern California

What?  “a collection of voices that live and breathe simultaneously with the breadth of an omniscient, collective consciousness”

Why you should listen?  You ever have that moment when you just need to chill out and disappear from the world? Tune into this when that happens

A reason you’ll be excited?  Listen to the tracks “1957” and “Silent Way”

Why I’m excited: These guys are brilliant.  How else do you explain them creating an alias, “Milo Greene,” while in college to serve as their booking agent/manager?  Fast forward as they morphed into literally, Milo Greene.  Musically, I love how these five individuals have found a way to craft a whole bunch of music styles under one roof through each of their own unique strengths.  When listening to the self titled album I feel like I’m being taken on an adventure and I like it.

If you like: Of Monsters and Men, The Lumineers, Vacationer, The Apache Relay

Final thoughts: I really dig Marlana Sheetz’s voice, stunning. Check out their performance on Letterman earlier this summer. And at Lollapalooza, Milo Greene pulled an early time slot but for those of you going, this is a great way to start your Saturday.  Bring a blanket and just chill out on the grass as you watch this rising band take you on your own adventure.

My recommendation, arrive early and stop at the Google Play stage to a couple songs from the Kopecky Family Band and then continue moving to the Playstation Stage for Milo Greene.

Saturday, August 4, noon

Why you need to know about Daytrotter.com

2 Jul

I’m going to let everyone in on a little secret and all because of my love for music.  If you have never heard of Daytrotter.com I highly encourage you to visit the site after reading this.

One day a while back I stumbled upon Daytrotter.com and thought it was the greatest site for music. I could listen to some of my favorite bands play wicked awesome, stripped down versions of their songs.  Of course I also learned of some new bands (like today, Sporting Life) and to this day I am always up for discovering as many new bands on the site as bands I love.  Even better, besides just popping them in a queue and listening, you can also download the sessions.

The site use to be free but now charges a $24 annual fee and at DoYouHearTheMusic.com we have zero problem paying this. We’re talking $2 a month people!  For access to some incredible music and surely material you won’t find anywhere else, this is a no brainer.  Added bonus, visit the site by tomorrow and sign up for an annual membership and you can get your hands on a limited edition vinyl of The Lumineers and Civil Wars sessions for FREE.  They are only printing as many as records as ordered so once they go to print, that’s it!

Here’s another reason why you should be all about Daytrotter, follow Sean on Twitter @realdaytrotter and you’ll be opened up to some super dope music and be the first to know of some upcoming sessions on the site.

And tune in July 4 where you can stream the  Barn on the 4th show with the Counting Crows!

So there you have it, one of my favorite sites to discover new music.   You are now in the know.
