My Thoughts on the Hangout Music Festival Line-up

10 Feb

Pretty powerful line-up at the Hangout Music Festival, May 18-20, on Alabama’s Gulf Shores.

Jack White, Dave Matthews Band and Red Hot Chili Peppers are a solid trio of headliners that highlight three days of solid music.

A look at some of the other initial acts announced:

Wilco – will be rocking in support of their new album

String Cheese Incident – never met a SCI show I didn’t like

The Flaming Lips – performing Pink Flyod’s Dark Side of the Moon

Chris Cornell – solid choice

Dispatch – ah a year back together and in comes the festivals again! So exciting!

Steve Winwood – now this will be a fun performance

Allen Stone – everybody needs a little Allen Stone in their lives

Alabama Shakes – what more can I say, they are on FIRE!

Gary Clark Jr. – if you haven’t listened to this man, best do so now

G. Love – c’mon y’all know this is a must see

Michael Franti & Spearhead – YES!!

Young The Giant – energetic live performances

Cage the Elephant – look online for video from Lollapalooza 2011

Dawes – amazing live show

M.Ward – another not to miss

Also included in the first announcement of artists Skrillex, Randy Newman, STS9, Coheed and Cambria, Flogging Molly, Dr. Dog, Gogol Bordello, Mavis Staples, Big Freedia, Shpongle, Zeds Dead, Paul Oakenfold, Yelawolf, Mac Miller, Hey Rosetta!, Paper Diamond, and Sleeper Agent.

More artists are expected to be announced soon.

Coachella 2012 Line-Up & My Initial Thoughts

10 Jan

Another year of anticipation has come and gone as the 2012 Coachella line-up was released and while it’s pretty awesome they secured all the acts for back-to-back weekends on April 13-15 and April 20-22 I have to say my initial reaction was meh.  Don’t get me wrong, there are a ton of phenomenal musicians slated to play the festival but I personally feel they lacked in the bigger acts category but did a stellar job with the smaller ones.

Headliners: Radiohead, great score and definitely one of the most sought after acts this year, The Black Keys love ‘em but bumping them up one slot from last year into the headline act…., Dre and Snoop, ok I get it and Cali kids will probably love this but is this how you really want to close out three days of music (I’ll probably be eating my words as this may end up being the most talked about performance)?

Also this year has so much more EDM and on the main stages, I know its music of the present but I wonder if/how it will influence and change the dynamic of the festival since it’s thrust to the top.  I’m a big fan of EDM and these artists but Swedish House Mafia, David Guetta, Avicii, Kaskade, Afrojack, Justice, Sebastian Ingrosso and Madeon all as “main acts” it could get interesting just look at how many other EDM acts are booked.

Now what really excites me about Coachella:

Friday: M83, Jimmy Cliff & Tim Armstrong (oh wow this is going to be awesome), GIRLS, The Rapture, Madeon, Yuck, Dawes, WU LYF, GIVERS, Wolf Gang, Ximena Sarinana, Band of Skulls, honeyhoney

Saturday: Miike Snow, St. Vincent, Manchester Orchestra, AWOLNATION, Azealia Banks, Kaiser Chiefs, The Head and The Heart, Laura Marling, tUnE yArDs, The Black Lips, Childish Gambino, The Vaccines, Grouplove, Gary Clark Jr., We Are Augustines

Sunday: Beirut, The Weeknd, The Hives, Real Estate, Wild Flag, Fitz & The Tantrums, araabMUZIK, Lissie, Gardens & Villa

Something else that I love and hope is a trend for all the festivals this year is the addition of acts from outside the United States.  Bands like WU LYF, Wolf Gang, M83, The Vaccines, The Hives and others that are extremely talented will get introduced to so many new fans.

All in will it be fun, heck yeah but what else will be fun is Coachella East aka Las Vegas.  With a week in between you better believe Las Vegas is going to be a mid-week retreat with acts popping up for DJ sets in clubs and concerts peppered all over the Las Vegas Strip.

Revisited: Brett Dennen and DAWES – 6 23 11 – Las Vegas

24 Jun

Last night was one of those concerts you really appreciate, intimate venue and musicians who you could tell were genuinely having fun.  Plus the venue, Veil at the Silverton, is a really great place in Vegas to catch a show.

I was super excited not only to see Brett Dennen in concert once again but also the opening act DAWES and let’s just say neither disappointed.  DAWES ripped through a 45 minute set playing a handful of songs off their new album Nothing Is Wrong, which came out two weeks ago, and work off their debut album North Hills including the crowd favorite “When My Time Comes.”  Two little side notes, last night bassist Wylie Gelber could have been mistaken for the Treme character Sonny played by Michiel Huisman and please if you haven’t already, check out Taylor Goldsmith’s side project Middle Brother which I still can’t get enough of.

A quarter after 9 p.m. Dennen took the stage in Las Vegas for the first time.  He definitely had the crowd dancing throughout while jamming on both his acoustic and electric guitars to deliver a 90 minute set that spanned his catalog and also included a couple sing-a-longs.  As expected, he performed a lot of new material off his latest disc, Loverboy including “Dancing at a Funeral,” “Comeback Kid,” and “Sydney (I’ll Come Running).” The highlight of the show however was the four song encore which began with Dennen playing “Heaven” and “Ain’t No Reason” acoustically before being joined by his band and DAWES for a rocking cover of Steve Miller Band’s “Swingtown.”  Closing with “Blessed” the song that put him on the musical map was a perfect way to cap the night.

Brett Dennen – Las Vegas – TONIGHT!

23 Jun

After a couple months of anticipation I am excited that Brett Dennen rolls into Las Vegas tonight and takes the stage over at the Silverton.  I’ve seen Brett Dennen perform a handful of times but never as the headliner so definitely interested to see how he stretches the set from the usual opener time of 45 minutes.  Currently in support of his new disc Loverboy, a disc that I am addicted to, Dennen should run the gamut and blend a nice mix of old with the new .  It should be a great show and tickets are only $15 which means any music lover would be foolish to miss this.  An added bonus, DAWES is opening.

Playlist: May Music

The inspiration for this month’s playlist has to do 100% with the idea of hopping in the car, cranking up the volume and listening to these tracks with the windows down and wind blowing in your face.  There is some new music scattered in throughout the playlist and chances are good I’ve mentioned all the artists on the blog in some regard.

Hope you like May Music!

Music Monday: Middle Brother

25 Apr

Another band I am really into lately has been Middle Brother.  Haven’t heard of them? You need to get yourself familiar pronto.  A quasi super group comprised of John J. McCauley III of Deer Tick, Taylor Goldsmith of Dawes, and Matt Vasquez of Delta Spirit these fellas are crazy good songwriters and put together a really great disc after first performing together at SXSW in 2010.  Releasing their self titled debut album last month, be on the lookout for the trio when you see any of their bands on festival billings.
