REVISITED: The Black Crowes – 12 10 10 – The Joint – Las Vegas, NV

11 Dec

Last night was the eighth TBC show I’ve seen and quite frankly I’m not sure I’ve ever heard them sound that good!  They were firing on all cylinders and the crowd was definitely soaking in one of the last remaining shows.  From the get go with “Movin on Down the Line,” “Jealous Again,” and Twice as Hard” the tone for the evening was set and it was a memorable one for sure.  Chris Robinson sounded alive as usual but to me the man who stole the show was Luther Dickson (also lead guitarist for North Mississippi Allstars) so crisp and spot on all night.  Also the trio of “I Ain’t Hiding,” “Soul Singing” and “Remedy” before the encore break definitely made me a happy camper.

While there were numerous songs I would have loved to hear live one last time, I have zero gripes about the show except last night really sunk in how much I’m going to miss The Black Crowes, true purveyors of rock and roll.

Also I was thrilled to see so many people at The Joint early for Truth & Salvage Co. Those boys can rock and definitely have a bright future ahead of them.

Revisited: Bruce Springsteen – Late Night with Jimmy Fallon

22 Nov

Almost a week later and I am still thinking about Bruce Springsteen’s performance on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. I must admit, I only started watching his show because The Roots are the house band and now I absolutely love the show. The Boss was a great interview and gave an even better performance (which was pretty much a given).  While Fallon dressed as Neil Young and the two of them did a rendition of Willow Smith’s “Whip My Hair,” here is a clip of Springsteen and The Roots performing “Because of the Night.” I mean c’mon Bruce Springsteen and The Roots sharing the stage together, how rad is that?!

Also a couple days later, Rolling Stone caught up with ?uestlove and I found his comments pretty awesome.  Here’s an excerpt:

“During rehearsal, when the producer said, ‘Ladies and gentleman, ‘Because The Night’ with the Professor and Little Steven, here’s Bruce Springsteen and The Roots’ — I couldn’t move,” ?uestlove tells Rolling Stone. “And they were looking at me like, ‘Okay count the song off.’ And I was like, I said, ‘Holy shit. I heard that.'”

He adds: “I mean, I’ve done some intense playing on our show, but that was the most intense playing I’ve ever done. He completely surpassed any expectation I’ve ever had for any mythical god of rock figure.”

Reel Big Fish & Goldfinger – 11 7 10 – House of Blues – Las Vegas

So last night I went to see Reel Big Fish and Goldfinger. Yes that is not a typo, a group of us decided to relive our youth.  And you know what, it was worth the $31 (we all got a good laugh remembering how it use to cost like $8 to see these guys).

Goldfinger put on one heck of a performance and even had Branden Steineckert from Rancid sitting in on drums. Really though I was excited for Reel Big Fish and the first song out of the shoot, “Sellout.” I thought how awesome that the band plays the song their probably most recognized for first!  That definitely set the tone for their performance and as the show went on I started to remember a whole bunch of the songs that I have not heard in easily a decade.  Closing with “Beer” was pretty much a given and definitely had the crowd still rip-roaring ready to rock out and leave on a high note.  Overall it was a far better show than I was expecting and beat spending a Sunday night on the couch.

Revisited: LCD Soundsystem – 10 12 10 – Pearl at Palms – Las Vegas

13 Oct

LCD Soundsystem rocked the house last night in Las Vegas. It was a high energy 90 minute show at the Pearl at Palms with fans getting down and for a Tuesday night you would have thought it was Friday and the last concert on earth.

For me, hearing “Daft Punk is Playing at My House” live was the highlight of the evening.  Here are a couple photos from the show.

Revisited: Dave Matthews Band August 20 & August 21 Concerts

In the last week I for one have definitely gotten my Dave Matthews Band fix in.  With DMB announcing they will be taking 2011 off I knew I had to catch them at least once in 2010 but I was fortunate enough to see three shows in the past week.  Following up the Mile High Music Festival performance I traveled to California to catch the August 20 show in Chula Vista and August 21 show in Irvine.

Thanks to my buddy we had pit tickets for Chula Vista and the experience is definitely up there in my top concerts ever after being only feet away from the band (see the photos above).  The set list for the show was a perfect balance of songs spanning the career of DMB.  “Big Eyed Fish” as the opener was a nice, unexpected choice and rolled right into “Bartender” which really got the crowd into a groove.  From the get go the boys were ready to rock with smiles beaming throughout the entire show and I must say that Carter’s was as wide as the Grand Canyon.  They were definitely having genuine fun on stage and ripping through the tracks as if they had something to prove.  “#41” as always was just magical and “Cornbread” brought out the funk but the highlight of the show was definitely “Two Step;” they jammed and Carter’s drum solo can be described in one word, WOW.  I highly suggest DMB fans visit antsmarching.org to grab the show.

In Irvine the crowd was definitely more festive and upbeat.  Getting it started with “Minarets” was a nice surprise and I was really stoked to hear “Write A Song” for the second night it a row as it has quickly become one of my new favorite DMB songs.  On the Big Whiskey bonus CD, I know it’s a long show but I hope this is the next single released because it’s a great little ballad with some sweet violin and guitar chords from Boyd and Dave.  This show also featured a relatively new song titled “Black Jack” which could easily become a staple on the rest of the 2010 tour.  If the fellas decide to put together a new album during the 2011 hiatus I’d expect to see this song on it.  Knowing that this would be my last DMB show for a while it was fitting that I had the chance to hear “Ants Marching” live one more time followed by an encore of “rye Whiskey” and “Jimi Thing,” a great ending.

Seeing the guys really jam and having more fun than I have seen before at any concerts it’s going to be sad that they are taking a year off but one can only hope they come back  with the same energy and cohesiveness that is being displayed on the 2010 summer tour.

Revisited: My Mile High Music Festival – Day 2

18 Aug

With a successful first day at Mile High Music Festival I was definitely looking forward to Day 2 and the great line-up.

  • Day 2 started out at the Wolf Stage to check out Los Angeles based Oh My Stars and they delivered way more than I was anticipating. Rocking out with tons of energy definitely help set the tone for the day of music ahead.  Their set included fun renditions of Lady GaGa’s “Bad Romance” and Jay-Z’s “Empire State of Mind” and a wicked performance of their single “Bloody November”
  • Next up was a southern rock performance by Drive-By Truckers.  It was good old rock and roll jam session perfect for the mid-afternoon
  • One of the big highlights of Day 2 came mid-afternoon when Ozomatli performed.  Always an upbeat, festive time, the boys did not disappoint and really had the crowd in unison singing and dancing the entire hour of their set.  In traditional Ozo fashion it was straight into the crowd to end the performance and I can’t wait for them to hit Vegas again on September 3 at the Hard Rock Hotel
  • Jimmy Cliff may be getting up there in age but he can still put on a show and I was thrilled to see the legend live.  Hearing him sing “I Can See Clearly Now” and “The Harder They Come” made my day
  • Knowing that Dave Matthews Band was going to draw the biggest crowd of MHMF, we decided to home base it from the Kyocera Main Stage which turned into the best idea for multiple reasons but one being that we got to check out Trevor Hall’s set at the adjacent Cougar Stage. While I have one of his LPs I really was wowed by how good he was live and his performance was definitely one of the top surprises for me at MHFM.  He also did a fun cover of M.I.A.’s “Paper Planes”
  • My Morning Jacket performed next on the main stage and while I didn’t get to hear my favorite song by them, “Dancefloors,” it was still an entertaining set with a fun sing-along of “Off The Record”
  • Another pleasant surprise for me and a band that has been around for some time was Railroad Earth jamming on the Cougar Stage.  In addition to myself becoming a fan I think they gained a whole heap as folks trickled in grab their spot for DMB and grooved to their whole set
  • DMB as expected came out and rocked MHMF.  In what typically is always an amazing show, the fellas brought a festive energy and a mix of old and new songs.  Looking back the set list was an amazing one.  Starting out with “Shake Me Like A Monkey” set the tone and hearing “What Would You Say” followed up by “#41” was definitely a highlight as was “Lie In Our Graves” with a little cover of Eric Clapton’s “Wonderful Tonight.” Last three songs before the encore were “Two Step” “You & Me” and “Ants Marching.”  The whole set list can be found here

Overall Day 2 was a rousing success. I would have loved to have taken in the performances by Weezer, Z-Trip, Boombox and Atmosphere but just like Day 1, too much music and too many decisions to make.

Also pretty saddened of the Denver Post’s coverage of the festival since it was in their backyard and only sending one reporter to cover and not even given a fair shake to many of the 40 plus acts over the two days.  I mean on Day 1 the reporter didn’t even arrive until after 4 p.m. surely missing some great performances.  You can read the recaps here and here.

Revisited: My Mile High Music Festival – Day 1

17 Aug

Well back from Denver and I already miss that place.  What an incredible city that really has everything to offer.  Every time I visit I find more reasons to love the city.  To say Mile High Music Festival was a success is an understatement, it was just about as good as it gets.  Spread over 24 fields, it was definitely music euphoria with three stages, two tents and a “beach” to bounce back and forth to.  AEG did a really great job laying out the festival and making everything easily accessible and a fun time for all.  Enough small talk, here are some highlights of Day 1.

  • While getting settled for Donavon Frankenreiter as the first act of the day, had the chance to hear Bobby Long’s set and this might have been my surprise of MHMF.  He’s a British singer-songwriter and has a great voice and rocked the stage as if he was the headliner at MHMF.  I’ll be checking out his music this week and I suggest you do the same as he just signed with ATO Records (Dave Matthews) so expect big things from this fella
  • Donavon Frankenreiter was the perfect act to get the afternoon set in motion.  A great crowd convened to the main stage and we were treated to a few surprises; John Oates of Hall & Oates sat in on the entire set, Donavon did a very chill cover of Tom Petty’s “American Girl” and he also performed his new single “Glow” which we wrote about on August 4
  • ALO crushed MHMF with their upbeat and lively performance.  Opening with one of my favorites, “Maria,” the crowd kept growing and growing as the boys jammed nonstop to songs old and new including “Man of the World” the title track off their latest release
  • Nas & Damian “Jr Gong” Marley was one of the most entertaining acts of the day.  In what began as a high energy emcee/DJ hip-hop get down, turned into a Nas greatest hits concert with the rapper performing everything from “Street Dreams” to “If I Ruled the World” and then melding into reggae-rap with the duo performing “As We Enter” and a heap of other tracks before giving way to Marley performing “Welcome To Jamrock” and singing a bunch of his father’s legendary music
  • Rusted Root jammed on well past their scheduled time with “Ecstasy” reverberating throughout the festival grounds
  • Cypress Hill was getting wild and definitely running the gamut on their hits
  • Keane came on late and was disappointing enough that I only stayed for two songs.  The only good thing about Keane coming on late was the opportunity to sing-along to the Steve Miller Band
  • Slightly Stoopid the act I was most looking forward to seeing at MHMF put on a fun set that included “Wicked Rebel” and “Collie Man” and the boys were joined by B-Real of Cypress Hill for their encore
  • Sadly missed Phoenix (same time as Slightly Stoopid) but heard they killed it
  • Caught the end of Derek Trucks & Susan Tedeschi on the way to Jack Johnson – it’s a shame they didn’t have a great crowd and I really can’t talk since I didn’t make the extra effort to hear them either
  • Jack Johnson definitely brought the masses and put on a really fun show but it seemed too chill and not enough energy coming from him.  Some highlights of his set did include Jack brining up Doanvon Franenreiter to perform “Breakdown” and “Mud Football” – which had the two embrace with a big hug at first (not sure the last time they shared the stage together since having a musical “falling-out”) and performing ALO’s “Girl I Wanna Lay You Down” with Zach Gill

More notes from Day 1: Beta Beach was bumping great house music all day and provided a good place to cool off in the water playground; in Coors Country and Budweiser was the beer sponsor?; Whole Foods was easily the best vendor at MHMF with cheap (yes, really) food and drinks and an amazing deal on SIGG water bottles and Honest Tea refills for $1; Justin’s Almond Butter and Hazelnut Spread are amazing; TicketHorse is the future of purchasing concert tickets.

Revisited: My First Concert

9 Aug

I was a mere eight years old in December 1989 and found myself at the Atlantic City Convention Center going to my first concert, The Rolling Stones. Of course at eight I couldn’t comprehend what a big deal The Rolling Stones were but I remember Mick Jagger running around like a maniac, gigantic blow-up legs inflating like the floats at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, we somehow wound up backstage and me asking my parents “what’s that smell?” Little did I know then that The Rolling Stones would become one of my favorite bands and that this would be the beginning of my love of music. I’ve been fortunate to have seen The Rolling Stones in three different decades (80s, 90s and 00s). I still have the concert t-shirt from that Steel Wheels tour and now it actually fits and is not used for pajamas.
