Countdown to Bonnaroo: 24 Days – Artist of the Day: Black Star

13 May

When I saw Black Star on the lineup for Bonnaroo I couldn’t believe it.  We’re talking Mos Def and Talib Kweli, reunited and ready to drop some of the best beats of the festival. I’d had the chance to see Kweli once before but this is going to be something special.  Having released only one album, it was like a flash in the pan and now the duo are slated to finally come out with a new record together.  I can remember in high school cranking Mos Def & Talib Kweli are Black Star and having “Definition” on repeat; “1,2,3, Mos Def and Talib Kweli, we came to rock it on to the tip top, best alliance in hip hop, why oh.” Indeed that should reign supreme next month.  I mean we are talking like this is one of the top 10 shows not to miss at the festival this year.

Countdown to Bonnaroo: 25 Days – Artist of the Day: The Temper Trap

12 May

If you read my blog you know my affection for bands from Australia and The Temper Trap might as well lead the pack.  Back in ’09/’10 it was all about “Fader” and “Sweet Disposition,” the latter skyrocketed the band as it got crazy club play being remixed by some top tier DJs and now the wait for new material is over as they will be fresh on the heels of dropping their sophomore effort when they perform at Bonnaroo.  I can’t wait to finally see the indie-rockers live, been wondering if I’d ever get the chance.

Countdown to Bonnaroo: 26 Days – Artist of the Day: Alice Cooper

11 May

Really there is not much to say except YES YES YES!  Having never had the opportunity to see Alice Cooper perform live, this is going to be a treat.   I mean we are talking about rock royalty taking the stage at the greatest music festival there is, Bonnaroo.  It’s a match made in heaven.

And I don’t know about anyone else but every time I hear “School’s Out” I think of Dazed and Confused. Can’t wait to see everyone singing-along to this.

Countdown to Bonnaroo: 27 Days – Artist of the Day: SOJA

10 May

This is a band I can’t wait to see at Bonnaroo.  While they have been around for a long time, they really came to my attention after opening for O.A.R. and I’ve been hooked since.  I mean who doesn’t love reggae music?  This is going to be the perfect band that I can see pulling an early time slot to get the good vibes flowing throughout the grounds.

Countdown to Bonnaroo: 28 Days – Artist of the Day: Fitz & The Tantrums

9 May

I take it back to November 2010 when I first heard Fitz & The Tantrums and I encourage you to read what I wrote on the blog back then, it’s all true.  In the year and a half since, they have seemingly blown up playing just about everywhere you could imagine and now make their appearance at Bonnaroo.  Having seen this group more than a handful of times I encourage you to experience their live show for yourself which will certainly be one big, hot and sweaty dance party in the Tennessee sun.

O.A.R. and B.o.B to perform “Champions” on The Tonight Show! (Video)

8 May

Big congrats to O.A.R. for their latest, “Champions,” a collaboration with B.o.B. as part of Duracell’s 2012 Summer Olympics campaign. Tune in this evening to The Tonight Show with Jay Leno to see the artists perform the song live for the first time!

Countdown to Bonnaroo: 30 Days – Artist of the Day: The Silent Comedy

7 May

Oh how sweet it is, one month from today!!! Now on to the music!

I promise you when I say, The Silent Comedy is one rising band you are going to want to make sure you know about.  Hailing from San Diego, these guys couldn’t be father from what you would expect them to sound like, owning a folk-rock style that is contagious.  With brothers Joshua and Jeremiah Zimmerman at the helm, this rock outfit brings it every night and their live shows are worth your time to catch them at Bonnaroo.

Countdown to Bonnaroo: 31 Days – Artist of the Day: The Kooks

6 May

Let me start out by saying if you haven’t had the chance to see The Kooks, make sure they are on your must see list.  And if you are wondering, “who are The Kooks?” I’ll bet you know at least three of their songs.  The English quartet are one of those bands that when you hear a song like “Naïve” or “Shine On” you’ll be “oh yeah, I love this song – this is The Kooks?!”  I caught their show at the House of Blues in Las Vegas earlier this year and it was a fun, peppy show and I expect nothing less at Bonnaroo next month.

Ugh NO, Foster The People cover Alabama Shakes’ “Hold On”

6 May

I’m a huge Foster The People fan, seen them more times than I can remember, featured them on the blog way back when, heck I even interviewed them to preview a show in Vegas but for the first time, I have to say no, no, no.  They recently with a little help from Luke Pritchard of The Kooks covered “Hold On” by the Alabama Shakes and while it may be a sign of respect to cover someone else’s work, some are best left alone.  Brittany Howard has a unique and incredible voice and quite frankly “Hold On” only sounds proper with her vocals on the track.  I applaud you for trying but don’t spoil something beautiful.

I suspect (and hope) there might be a better, updated version of this coming next month when all three bands will be at Bonnaroo.

Here is the video of FTP covering “Hold On” and you can judge for yourself.  If you want to hear the original by the Alabama Shakes, click here.

Countdown to Bonnaroo: 33 Days – Artist of the Day: Rubblebucket

4 May

It’s that time again, my Countdown to Bonnaroo!  33 days to go and I couldn’t be more excited. So many great bands set to play this year that I had to sneak in a few extra days in the countdown!

Today’s act, one of the newest additions to the lineup, Rubblebucket!  Hailing from Brooklyn, NY, Rubblebucket are an indie-dance troop that is sure to have you working up a sweat moving to their grooves.  And how can you not love a band with a great horn section (let alone from the band leader)?!

Here’s my favorite track from the group, “Silly Fathers.” I hope you enjoy.
