New Music: Clement Marfo & The Frontline – “Last Night”

10 Oct

Aww yeah.  New single from Clement Marfo & The Frontline – “Last Night.”  Been a huge fan since I first heard of him almost a year ago and hopefully everyone in the States will start to take notice and give some spins to the man from across the pond because really you need to.
Enjoy!

My New Music: Wild Cub – Youth

3 Oct

Two words: Wild Cub

Who? The dynamic duo of Keegan DeWitt and Jeremy Bullock

What?  A poppy sound you’re gonna love.  Filled with heavy synths and bright guitars; and two voices that complement each other flawlessly, you’ll be grooving from the start to Wild Cub.

Why you should listen? In August the duo dropped their debut LP, Youth.  Plus if you want a little flashback to the ‘80s blended with today, you’ll really dig this.

A reason you’ll be excited?  PASTE, SPIN, MTV, Filter Magazine, IFC, Consequence of Sound and more are all on the bandwagon of the Nashville duo and appearances at festivals like SXSW and Bonnaroo doesn’t suck either.

Why I’m excited: Listen to the songs “Thunder Clatter” and “Colour” and you’ll be hooked.

If you like: MNDR, White Arrows, Kopecky Family Band, Youth Lagoon.

Final thoughts: I’m kicking myself again for discovering another band post Bonnaroo.  Along with Jukebox The Ghost, these are the two bands I really wish I would have seen.  I’ve been listening to Youth since it dropped and have been absolutely hooked.

New Music Tuesday: Mumford & Sons, Lupe Fiasco, No Doubt, Ozomatli, Talib Kweli and more!

25 Sep

For the third straight week, New Music Tuesday is absolutely amazing with a handful of BIG TIME releases.  We’re talking Mumford & Sons – Babel, Lupe Fiasco – Food & Liquor 2: The Great American Rap Album Pt. 1, No Doubt – Push and Shove, Ozomatli – OzoKidz, Talib Kweli – Prisoner of Conscious, Preservation Hall Jazz Band – St. Peter and 57th, Dragonette – Bodyparts, Green Day – Uno!, Anita Baker – Only Forever, The Soft Pack – Strapped, deadmau5 – >album goes here< and a whole bunch more.

As for my two top picks of the week, tough call yet really simple:

Mumford & Sons – Babel

Mumford & Sons fresh off their performance on Saturday Night Live drop one of the most anticipated albums of the year and I promise you won’t be disappointed.  Unlike their incredible debut Sigh No More, Babel is more upbeat from the start and really captures more of the live M&S experience.  Give a few spins through the record and you’ll be hooked.  If you’ve seen the fellas live, chances are you’ve heard what early on I have to say my favorite tracks on the disc are “Hopeless Wanderer” and “Below Your Feet” – oddly enough track 11 on both discs are my favorite (“Dust Bowl Dance” on Sigh No More).  Enjoy!

Lupe Fiasco – Food & Liquor 2: The Great American Rap Album Pt. 1

If you know me, you know I’m a gigantic Lupe Fiasco fan so it’s no surprise to see his new disc here as one of my top picks.  I’m really looking forward to listening to the “follow-up” to his debut album six years and two albums later, as I’ve only heard a few tracks including “Around My Way (Freedom Ain’t Free)” which samples Pete Rock and C.L. Smooth’s “TROY” and from what I’ve read, it’s very politically and culturally charged.  He speaks load and clear enough that his message is heard and people respond.

The New Music Tuesday That Was: The Killers, Ryan Bingham, Kanye West, Grizzly Bear & more

19 Sep

A day late I know but what the heck.  New Music Tuesday for the second straight week was a powerful one.  The Killers dropped Battle Born, Ryan Bingham – Tomorrowland, Wiz Khalifa – O.N.I.F.C, Ben Folds Five returned with The Sound Of the Life Of The Mind Out, Dinosaur Jr. – I Bet On Sky, Grizzly Bear – Shields, Martin Solveig – Smash, Ne_yo – R.E.D., Pink – The Truth About Love, Nelly Furtado – The Spirit Indestructible, and many others including Kanye West – Kanye West Presents Good Music Cruel Summer.

Seriously how much great music is coming out this fall? As for my two picks this week:

I’m a fan of The Killers outright so it’s no surprise that I like what I’ve listened to thus far on Battle Born.  It’s what I expected and got to love how they always stay true to their home, Las Vegas!  Also worth checking out is the short film Werner Herzog made while following the fellas leading up to the release.

Ryan Bingham, man what more can I say but this guy is just so damn good.  Had the pleasure of seeing him in concert a couple times, interviewing him last year and I just can’t get enough of his music.  Tomorrowland is the Ryan Bingham I remember first listening to when I discovered, Roadhouse Sun and then his first album Mescalito.  I encourage everyone to give this disc a listen and get ready to rock out.

Vegas You Ready For This Weekend: The Hives, Mariachi El Bronx, Young The Giant, Vintage Trouble

13 Sep

I may as well start my weekend officially on Thursday with the amount of live music in Las Vegas.

Tonight it is straight over to The Cosmopolitan to check out The Hives.  I’ve been waiting YEARS to see these guys live and finally I get the chance! Plus it’s the anniversary party for Vegas Rated, the magazine that I contribute music stories to. Fiesta Fiesta!

While I’m super stoked for The Hives show, I’m beyond excited about Friday night where Mariachi El Bronx, takes to Book & Stage at 10:30 p.m. for an amazing kickoff to Mexican Independence Day Weekend in Las Vegas.  If you have never heard of Mariachi El Bronx, trust me when I say you don’t want to miss this show.  If you have heard of Mariachi El Bronx but never seen them live, this is a show you don’t want to miss.  If you know their story and the original band, The Bronx, you definitely want to see this show.  I had the pleasure of finally getting to see them this past June at Bonnaroo and it was easily one of my favorite shows of the festival.  I’m expecting this to be the highlight of my weekend.

I know, I know I just proclaimed my weekend to be taken over by Mariachi El Bronx but on Saturday my friends Sonny and Chris of Rock n’ Roll Wine host their 7th Wine Amplified event over at Mandalay Bay Beach with music by Young The Giant and Vintage Trouble.  Even cooler, my brother will be pouring his Labor Wines at the event!  So I’ve got family, two great wines from my brother, my friends events and two bands I love performing – yeah you could say this is going to be a fun evening.

And that is why my weekend is starting tonight!

My New Music: Youngblood Hawke

12 Sep

Big shout out to my buddy David for turning me on to this band a couple weeks ago.  I seriously can’t wait for the rest of the world to discover this group.  Expecting some big things after just a four-track EP.

Two words: Youngblood Hawke

Who? A five-piece from LA

What?  The next great band you probably haven’t heard of but will be hearing a lot about in the future

Why you should listen? Because these five kids are incredibly talented and bring a fun, happy go lucky sound to life.

A reason you’ll be excited?  Listen to their lyrics and chances are you’ll find an instant connection and that it could be on parallel with your life.

Why I’m excited: I listen to A LOT of music but it’s rare for me to get uber excited about a band instantly and that’s the way it was with Youngblood Hawke.  “We Come Running” was the first track I listened to and I immediately listened to the other three tracks on the EP and was hooked.  From their sound, lyrics, harmonies, it all just was like a perfect storm and I just hope others get to discover this band too.

If you like: Grouplove, Foster The People, fun. and then meld them all together.

Final thoughts: Their EP dropped mid-August and you better hop on the train now because it’s going to be picking up steam fast.  It will all make sense when you listen to the EP.  Click HERE for the Spotify link to the EP.

New Music Tuesday: Dave Matthews Band – Away From The World

11 Sep

Today is the day, a bevvy of new albums drop, I listed a heap of them on Five For Friday last week but for me the one I’m most excited about is Dave Matthews Band Away From The World. Not just because it’s a new disc from one of my favorite bands but because Steve Lillywhite produced it (Before These Crowded Streets was the last released album together; while the unreleased Lillywhite Sessions was simply an amazing collection of songs that took on a whole life of its own). Finally after more than a decade DMB and Lillywhite have reunited and put together a great album. If you were lucky enough to catch a show on the summer tour, you’ve definitely heard some of the new material as “Mercy,” “Gaucho,” “Sweet,” “The Riff,” and “If Only” were steady on setlists while the last few tour dates have had the band performing nearly the entire album. As for the album itself, after listening through the disc, you will really start to hear that old DMB sound we all grew up loving. Enjoy!

Five For Friday: DMB, Imagine Dragons, Kanye, Doheny Days & New Music Tuesday

7 Sep

Five For Friday, here’s some good tidbits to get you in the right mindset this weekend.

  1. Recently a buddy of mine won an all expense paid trip courtesy of Volkswagen to see Dave Matthews Band at the Gorge over Labor Day Weekend.  Not only was I stoked for him because he’s a huge DMB and music nut like me but it’s the Gorge, a place I’m still trying to get to.  Little did I know that after the show him and two other friends would appear in a whole Rolling Stone slideshow documenting the weekend.   Check it out HERE.
  2. Hometown Vegas boys Imagine Dragons dropped their first full length release this week, Night Visions.  Pick it up and catch them on tour with AWOLNATION.
  3. Click HERE to listen to the new Kanye West track “Clique.” Some good guests on this track too!
  4. One of the final music festivals of the summer takes place this weekend, Doheny Days and features a pretty solid lineup where tickets are only $100 for two days.  Jane’s Addiction, The Flaming Lips, Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros, Santigold, Steel Pulse, Delta Spirit, Milo Greene and Jeramiah Red and others perform.
  5. Next Tuesday is going to be one of the most ridiculous New Music Tuesdays ever, you’ve got Bob Dylan (Tempest), Dave Matthews Band (Away From The World), Chris Robinson Brotherhood (The Magic Door), The Avett Brothers (The Carpenter), The xx (Coexist), Thee Oh Sees (Putrifiers II), ZZ Top (La Futura), A$AP Rocky (LongLiveASAP), Ludacris (Ludaversal), David Byrne & St. Vincent (Love This Giant), Calexico (Algiers), Akon (Stadium), Aaron Lewis (The Road), DMX (Undisputed), Kix Brooks (New To This Town) and more!
