Now Playing: AWOLNATION – “Guilty Flithy Soul”

18 Nov

TGIF.  Get out and enjoy the weekend.  A little AWOLNATION to kick it off.

Now Playing: Gringo Star – “Light In The Sky”

17 Nov

Another band I’m really jamming to these past few weeks is Gringo Star. The Atlanta quartet are back with their sophomore effort, Count Yer Lucky Stars, which was released last month.  It may take you a couple listens of the album to get into these guys but you should find a little bit of southern rock n roll-psychedelic tunes perfect to get you through the day.  Here’s what I think is one of the top tracks off the album, “Light in the Sky.”

Now Playing: Alabama Shakes

16 Nov

The train is coming and you better hop on board before you miss this group, the Alabama Shakes.   Currently their four-song EP is available and it’s one you should definitely add to your collection.  If you like multiple genres rolled into one (R&B, Soul, Rock, etc.), you’ll be a fan of this rising band.  Plus I can’t get enough of Brittany Howard’s voice; she has soul running through her and an old school feel reminiscent of some female vocalists from the 60s.  The only sad thing is I don’t know when I’ll have a chance to see them live.  Here’s hoping for a trip out west, Las Vegas would be nice!

On a random note, it may be just me but the opening chords on “Hold On” have me thinking it’s a take on CCR’s “Down on the Corner.” I could be way off but that’s what I hear.

Video: Where’s The Party? presented by Carlsberg featuring Axwell

15 Nov

Thanks to the fine folks at Carlsberg, beer isn’t the only reason why you should love them.  Check out this killer video from their Where’s The Party? promotion from this past summer featuring Axwell.  Sick video and I’m sure like me, you’ll want to be there next year.  Carlsberg and Axwell teamed up to visit Gothenburg, Stockholm, Bastad and Visby as part of the quest to bring a slice of Miami and Ibiza to Sweden.

New Music Tuesday: Drake, Childish Gambino, Los Campesinos!

15 Nov

New music Tuesday is here and a good week if you love hip-hop.

  • Drake’s much anticipated sophomore effort, Take Care, drops and should come firing out the gate and reach number one on the charts.

  • Donald Glover and his alter ego, Childish Gambino, release his debut album CAMP, a follow-up to his heralded EP.

  • Betty Wright: The Movie with The Roots, a soulful album with plenty of guest spots may be the play however.
  • And on the indie front, Los Campesinos! are back with their latest full length release, Hello Sadness.

New Music: Betty Wright with The Roots – “Grapes on a Vine” ft. Lil Wayne

14 Nov

Kicking this week off with a little soul mostly because I can’t wait for new music Tuesday tomorrow and Betty Wright: The Movie – with The Roots.  Yes, you didn’t misread that, the 70s soul singer has teamed up with one of my favorite groups to put together quite the album which also includes guest spots by Snoop Dogg, Joss Stone and Lil Wayne who drops in on the track below, “Grapes on a Vine.”

It’s also great timing for The Roots who put out their latest album, Undun, at the beginning of December.
