Tonight: The Avett Brothers, Tomorrow: G.Love & Special Sauce and more

22 Jul

Holy concerts!  Vegas is stacked this weekend with a ton of great shows.  For me, it’s simple; I’ve been waiting a while to see The Avett Brothers and they are the Friday night selection.  Tomorrow, I can’t stray from one of my favorite artists, G. Love.  I’m starting to lose count on how many of his shows I’ve been to and if his performance is anything like it was at Bonnaroo, oh man are we in for a treat.  Both are performing at the Silverton inside Veil which is almost as intimate of a venue as you can get in Vegas.

Also on Saturday, Queens Of The Stone Age play Cosmopolitan, Soundgarden is back and rocks out at The Joint, INXS is at Pearl at Palms and local jam band about to make it big, Moksha is at House of Blues.

New Music: John Butler Trio Live at Red Rocks DVD/CD

20 Jul

The wait is over.  A year after performing in front of their largest audience in the US at what I consider to be the greatest music venue in the world, Red Rocks in Morrison, Colorado, the John Butler Trio have released a DVD/CD commemorating the momentous occasion.

Madeon – Pop Culture Live Mash-up

19 Jul

In May I was enamored with Madeon’s remix of Deadmau5’s “Raise Your Weapon” and now the 17 year old has me in awe again. Check this video out and you’ll understand why.

Video: Foster The People – “Helena Beat”

18 Jul

Check it out, the new Foster The People video for “Helena Beat” which premiered today. The video which was described by the band as  “a post-apocalyptic, ‘Lord of the Flies’ meets ‘Mad Max,'” was directed by Ace Norton.

New Music: Boy & Bear

18 Jul

I swear there seems to be more and more great music coming out of Australia and Boy & Bear are the latest such group.  After putting out a rocking EP, Emperor Antarctica, and spending some time touring with Mumford & Sons, the five-piece folk group are getting set to release their first full length record, Moon Fire next month.  If the more upbeat, “Feeding Line” is any indication, this could shoot right up as one of the top albums of 2011.  I haven’t heard the CD but from this single and their previous EP, these fellas have a bright future ahead of themselves.  Lucky for us in the States, they are playing Lollapalooza in a couple weeks (followed by two NYC shows)!  Give a listen and judge for yourself.  And if at first listen you start thinking it sounds a little Brandon Flowers/The Killers-ish, you’re not alone.

Revisited: Widespread Panic – 7 16 11 – Las Vegas – The Joint

17 Jul

If it really was the last time I’d be able to see a Widespread Panic show, what a night it was.  Last night the legendary rockers performed the final date on the Summer Tour at The Joint at the Hard Rock Hotel in Las Vegas and had a capacity crowd going wild from start to finish.  For me I’d have to say the highlights of the first set were easily “Climb to Safety,” and “All Along The Watchtower” followed by “All Time Low.”  As for the second set, “Surprise Valley” into “Heaven” back to “Surprise Valley” into Drums and back into “Surprise Valley” was sick and a random occurrence, Carrot Top came out during “Coconut” and did a little percussion assistance.  And the encore, wow, you couldn’t ask for more; “Ophelia” into “Shape I’m In” was a funky good time and if “Porch Song” is the final song I ever get to hear the boys perform live, no complaints.

I’ve been lucky enough to see Widespread Panic more than a handful of times and if after 25 years this is the final year, their live shows will surely be missed.  I hope that when JB said at the end of the show “We’ll see you” and then paused before saying “sometime,” that there is a chance they won’t be saying goodnight forever.

Big thanks to EverydayCompanion.com for always being my source for Widespread Panic setlists.  Below is last night’s.

1: Henry Parsons Died, Climb To Safety, Radio Child, Sharon, Visiting Day, Rebirtha, Driving Song > Disco > Breathing Slow > Driving Song, All Along The Watchtower, All Time Low

2: Pigeons > Junior, That Don’t Make It Junk, Coconut*, Jack, Surprise Valley > Heaven > Surprise Valley > Drums > Surprise Valley, Space Wrangler** > Tall Boy

E: When You Coming Home, Ophelia > The Shape I’m In, Porch Song

** with various crew members on percussion

Tonight: Graffiti6 Plays Vegas

13 Jul

Back in October 2010 I posted about the pop-rock UK duo of producer TommyD and singer-songwriter Jamie Scott who together make up Graffiti6 and tonight they descend upon Las Vegas to perform at Book & Stage at Cosmopolitan.  To say I’m stoked in an understatement and if you are in Vegas I highly recommend you make your way over at 10 p.m. tonight.

I can’t wait for July 19 when Spike Jonze’s video for the Beastie Boys’ “Don’t Play No Game That I Can’t Win” featuring Santigold drops; but in the meantime here’s Major Lazer’s remix of the track off Hot Sauce Committee Part Two.
