Five For Friday: Foxygen, Chvrches, Rolling Stones, Wiz Khalifa, Youngbood Hawke and more

30 Nov

Wow, last day of November already!  Crazy how fast this year has flown by.  Lots of great musical moments and one more month to make some more memories.  As for this Five For Friday, get your weekend started with this:

  1. Early this week I posted about Foxygen and CHVRCHES, if you haven’t given a listen already, you definitely need to.
  2. The Rolling Stones are definitely pulling out the guest spots on their 50th anniversary shows.  Last night in London, Eric Clapton and Florence Welch.
  3. Looking forward to next Tuesday when Wiz Khalifa drops his new album, O.N.I.F.C.
  4. In Las Vegas?  Next week, December 6 at The Joint,  X107.5 Holiday Havoc takes place with a bistering line-up: Youngblood Hawke, AWOLNATION, Passion Pit and The Shins.
  5. Big shout out to my friends DJs Roger Gangi and M!KEATTACK who get to DJ the coolest ice skating rink in the west at the BLVD Pool at The Cosmopolitan.  Check it out, wicked sweet setup and great tunes.

Happy Birthday Jimi!

27 Nov

Today would have been Jimi Hendrix’s 70th birthday! A little salute to the musician I wish I could have seen perform live.

Cool little tribute here via Spinner to.

Five For Friday: @LIB_Festival, Wiz Khalifa, 50 Cent, The Heist, Tyler Bryant

16 Nov

Wow, what a crazy week in the best way possible!  This week’s Five For Friday is extra special.

  1. Earlier this week we announced the Life Is Beautiful Festival which will be coming to Downtown Las Vegas in fall of 2013.  Aurelian Marketing Group, Another Planet Entertainment (Outside Lands and Treasure Island music festivals), Downtown Project and MAKTUB Marketing.  I’m beyond excited about this and can’t wait to share this experience with everyone! Stay tuned for more info!
  2. Wiz Khalifa, caught his concert at Thomas & Mack Arena last evening.  Wiz is easily one of my favorite hip-hop acts today and this being the third time I’ve seen him live, he’s come a long way in terms of his over performance.  For 90 minutes it was nonstop Wiz and he kept the crowd engaged the entire time while even breaking out some new tunes off the new album due out December 4.  And of course the show was complete with guest spots but his opening acts Juicy J, Chevy Woods, Lola Monroe and more including a very special guest, 50 Cent!
  3. Speaking of 50 Cent, he made the sports section here in the LVRJ today as he applied for a boxing promoters license in Nevada.  Look out for his first promoted event out here in December if all goes well.
  4. Macklemore & Ryan Lewis – if you haven’t listened to The Heist yet, what are you waiting for!  Get on it now.  Special guest spots from Schoolboy Q and Allen Stone among others.
  5. Tyler Bryant and the Shakedown, still can’t get this kid’s guitar skills out of my head.  Check it out, you’ll thank me.

My Review of Mark Knopfler and Bob Dylan in Vegas SEVEN

2 Nov

Last weekend I headed over to Mandalay Bay for the Bob Dylan concert; figured I hadn’t seen him live in a while and this may be the last time I get to see him live.  With Mark Knopfler of Dire Straits fame serving as the opening act, it was a double billing of great music.  Check out my review which ran in the November 1 issue of Vegas SEVEN.

PARIS (Reuters) – The Rolling Stones performed an energetic warm-up gig in Paris on Thursday for a few hundred fans after announcing on Twitter that tickets would go on sale for 15 euros ($19.45) just hours in advance.

“I can’t believe we’re all still standing up, you’d think by now one or two of us would be sitting down, but we’re not,” lead singer Mick Jagger, 69, told fans at the Trabendo, a 700-capacity venue in northern Paris, during the 75 minute surprise show.

Fans said the small space created an optimal setting for the show which kicked off with “Route 66” and ended with “Brown Sugar”.

“We were right next to them, we could see them perfectly,” said one French fan who gave his name as Gianni. “It was a very small room and they were running all over the stage…they seemed really happy.”

Some got an additional perk after the show, as Jagger signed autographs before being whisked away in a black Mercedes sedan.

Earlier this month, the band announced they would perform four concerts at large arenas – two in London and two near New York – to celebrate their 50th anniversary. Their last world tour ended in 2007.

But fans have complained about high ticket prices, which range from 95 pounds ($150) to as much as 950 pounds for a “VIP hospitality” seat. Tickets have been offered online for several thousands pounds each, British media has reported.

The Paris music scene has been awash with rumours that the Stones will also play to bankers invited by Paris-based investment house Carmignac Gestion at a theatre in the heart of Paris on Monday.

In recent years, Carmignac has recruited former Velvet Underground frontman Lou Reed and British rocker Rod Stewart to play similar gigs, usually to an exclusive audience.

Carmignac sent out mystery invitations giving the date and location of what it called “the biggest secret event of the year” without identifying the performer. The investment house has declined to comment.

On Thursday, the band banned mobile phones, cameras, video equipment and recording devices from those going into the gig.

Some fans drove to Paris from as far away as Germany.

Sebastian Baaske said he set off in his car from Hanover, Germany on Wednesday afternoon in hopes of securing a ticket.

“My girlfriend said I’d regret it if I didn’t… It’s all worth it,” the 35-year-old Baaske said.

The Rolling Stones will play the O2 Arena in the British capital on November 25 and 29 before crossing the Atlantic to perform at the Prudential Center, Newark, on December 13 and 15.

Five For Friday: @TIMFSF, Deap Vally, Kendrick Lamar and The Sheepdogs

19 Oct

Back from a disappearing act for a little bit with a Five For Friday to get your weekend kicking into drive.

  1. Last weekend I attended the Treasure Island Music Festival in San Francisco.  Wow, what an incredible and intimate venue with 15,000 of my closest friends and ridiculously amazing views of SF.  Tucked away on this little island, the music was rocking, the food was delicious and the crowd was just perfect.   Highlights for me were easily Los Campensinos!, Dirty Ghosts, The War on Drugs, Public Enemy, Hospitality, M83 and Wild Belle.  Food wise, shout out to John Fink of The Whole Beast – great to see you again and your Lamb Poutine was insane!
  2. Really digging the band Deap Vally, check out “Gonna Make My Own Money
  3. If you’re in Vegas tonight, two awesome rising acts and you should see one – Kendrick Lamar is at Hard Rock Café on The Strip (I saw him this summer at Bonnaroo and he killed it), throwback rockers The Sheepdogs are at Vinyl inside the Hard Rock Hotel (these fellas seriously are amazing).
  4. Die Antwoord released the official video for “Fatty Boom Boom.”
  5. “Its a long way to the top if you want to rock & roll.”

My Interview with Christian Zucconi of GROUPLOVE in Vegas SEVEN

What can I say except I’m a huge fan of Grouplove and I have been for some time.  Having had the chance to see them perform live several times, I’m excited to see them next week out here in Las Vegas and to make it even more special, I had the opportunity to chat with Christian Zucconi to preview the concert in the new issue of Vegas SEVEN.  The issue dropped today and you can click HERE or see below.

Hope to see everyone at the show, it’s going to be a great one and Christian promised a jump in the pool following the last song!
