Wolfgang Gartner TONIGHT

If you are in Las Vegas I highly suggest you make sure your plans include heading over to Vanity Nightclub at the Hard Rock Hotel tonight to listen to Wolfgang Gartner. One of the most talented DJs in the game is performing during Godskitchen and it will be a DJ set you won’t want to miss.

Don’t say I didn’t tell you so but he is going to be a household name in the states very soon just like Kaskade and Deadmau5 are now. Speaking of Deamau5, Gartner has collaborated on a track with him that should be out very soon!

I Like It

I’ve got to admit it; I like an Enrique Iglesias song. Yep there I said it. “I Like It” is a fun club/pool party track and I’m really digging Chuckie’s remix of the song.

Maybe all the time in the sun hanging by the pool has gone to my head but take a listen and judge for yourself.

My Mile High Music Festival: Ozomatli

If you’ve heard of Ozomatli you have to love them and if you have no idea who they are, just know this; they have won Latin Grammys in 2002 and 2005 for “Best Latin Rock/Alternative Album.”  While you may think, “Latin Grammy” with a big question mark, this is a band that transcends all races and genders for the love of music.  They are primarily a Latin, hip-hop and rock music band that dabs into salsa, jazz, funk, reggae and rap, essentially providing the soundtrack for the country and world we live in and committed to bringing the beats and sounds to people of all kinds.

Something else interesting about Los Angeles based Ozomatli that people may not know, Chali 2na and DJ Cut Chemist of the now debunked Jurassic 5 were members of Ozomatli (2na has come back from time-to-time). From inception, the band has ranged anywhere from as high as 10 members down to seven with a core of six original members.

To see Ozomatli live know that it is one gigantic party and that the band not only feeds off of the crowd but joins the crowd and makes it a musical moment to remember.  One of my favorite Ozomatli memories to date was seeing them live on Halloween in Hawai’i for Halloween High Steppin’ at some hole in the wall Mexican restaurant with 200 people.  The energy was through the roof that evening and add in everyone dressed in costumes it was sure a night to remember.  I imagine that seeing them perform at Mile High Music Festival will remind me of that live show and what an exciting band they are.

My Mile High Music Festival: Dave Matthews Band

As we inch a day closer to Mile High Music Festival I can hardly contain myself and wishing for it to be Friday already and boarding a plane to the Rocky Mountains.  The big headliner for MHMF is of course, Dave Matthews Band, and being that the band is taking 2011 off, this is going to be one of the last times to see they boys before their hiatus (let’s just hope this is a one year break and not longer).  The Denver Post put out a great piece on DMB “saving” MHMF and it’s worth a read if you have a few minutes to spare, click here. 

I’m really excited to see DMB because I feel that since the passing of LeRoi Moore the band has come back with a powerful position to play damn good music and leave it all on the stage every night as if they were a new band out to prove themselves.  I was at the show the night that Moore passed away which was such a somber experience and of course not the DMB I had grown to love and like many others, questioned what was going to happen to the band.  Well I was fortunate to see five shows last year and man did the band sound down right awesome and with Tim Reynolds, Jeff Coffin and Rashawn Ross in the mix the shows really captured the DMB spirit again.  So this time, in Denver where DMB has had a cult like following over the past 20 years and released a few live albums, this should be one special performance with everlasting memories.

Mile High Music Festival

Mile High Music Festival is finally here! Ok well a five long days away but man am I stoked about two days of amazing music.  After booking tickets months ago the flight to Denver is oh so close and I can’t wait.  On Saturday, August 14 and Sunday, August 15 The Fields at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park will be home to over 40 music performances and definitely over a handful of acts I can’t wait to hear. 

The toughest part over the two days will be agonizing over which performances are a must see and which I’ll sadly have to take a pass on.  I do know that Saturday will get started with Donavon Frankenreiter’s performance and I’m definitely in to see ALO, Nas & Damian “Jr Gong” Marley, Slightly Stoopid and Jack Johnson.  The rest of Saturday is a toss-up.  As for Sunday, Drive-By Truckers and Ozomatli are shoe-ins for the early side with Jimmy Cliff, Z-Trip, Weezer, My Morning Jacket following and Dave Matthews Band wrapping up the festival.

So much good music in one place over two days and add in what a city Denver is and you can’t ask for much more.  DoyouHearTheMusic.com will mostly be devoted to my preview of Mile High Music Festival artists the rest of the week aka a way for me to talk about some of my favorites.  If you’re reading this my hope is that you find some new music to listen to along the way and if you want to throw in your two cents, please do!

Revisited: My First Concert

I was a mere eight years old in December 1989 and found myself at the Atlantic City Convention Center going to my first concert, The Rolling Stones. Of course at eight I couldn’t comprehend what a big deal The Rolling Stones were but I remember Mick Jagger running around like a maniac, gigantic blow-up legs inflating like the floats at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, we somehow wound up backstage and me asking my parents “what’s that smell?” Little did I know then that The Rolling Stones would become one of my favorite bands and that this would be the beginning of my love of music. I’ve been fortunate to have seen The Rolling Stones in three different decades (80s, 90s and 00s). I still have the concert t-shirt from that Steel Wheels tour and now it actually fits and is not used for pajamas.
