Countdown to @LifeIsBeautiful: 19 Days – @AlabamaShakes

6 Oct

“Don’t worry sweet baby! Don’t you ever worry ’bout a thing. Put them worries on the shelf ‘n’ learn to love yourself Don’t be your own worst enemy.”

If you’re like me, you’re counting down the days until Brittany Howard and her crew hop up on stage at Life is Beautiful and do their thing. If you’ve never seen the Alabama Shakes live in concert, you’re in for a treat.  Every time I’ve seen them in concert, they haven’t disappointed.  From a small sized tent to a massive festival field and an indoor concert hall, they’ve just crushed it and I can’t wait for them to bring their sweet sound to Life is Beautiful.  Gonna be a rock and roll good time!

Countdown to Bonnaroo: 3 Days – Artist of the Day: Alabama Shakes

4 Jun

Back in November 2011 I stumbled upon the Alabama Shakes and was completely overwhelmed with what to me is one of the greatest voices I have heard in my 30 years of existence.  Brittany Howard had me from the first note she sang.  It was like she was channeling a sound that has been missing from rock and roll for decades and Muscle Shoals received a revival as unexpected and welcomed with open arms.  Every chance I got I was rushing to tell anyone, “you’ve got to hear this band, your mind is going to be blown” and since I’m happy to gloat a little to being on the blog prior to MTV and Rolling Stone, and they have become the talk of the business, garnering well deserved national attention (SXSW appearances pushed them over the top) while releasing their debut album, Boys & Girls.

While there is no “headline act” at Bonnaroo on Thursday night, you may as well give that honor to the Alabama Shakes and their 11:30 p.m. slot in This Tent. No disrespect to any of the other super talented acts performing at the same time (Glossary for one), but this is where everyone should be.  Get ready to rock your faces off with one of the best out there today.

New Music: Alabama Shakes – Boys & Girls

9 Apr

Every music fan should be excited this week as the Alabama Shakes release their debut album, Boys & Girls (available for iTunes download now).  From the first moment I heard Brittany Howard’s voice I was infatuated and just loved her band’s sound.  To me, Alabama Shakes are a throwback to an era when the best music was being made and creativity was at an all time high.  Do yourself a favor, get this album, crank it up and just listen.  This is what rock and roll is!

They are the up-and-comers with the biggest buzz right now (I told you to hop on the train last November) and if you have the opportunity to catch them live this summer, do not miss out (I’m getting mine finally, at Bonnaroo).

Now Playing: Alabama Shakes

The train is coming and you better hop on board before you miss this group, the Alabama Shakes.   Currently their four-song EP is available and it’s one you should definitely add to your collection.  If you like multiple genres rolled into one (R&B, Soul, Rock, etc.), you’ll be a fan of this rising band.  Plus I can’t get enough of Brittany Howard’s voice; she has soul running through her and an old school feel reminiscent of some female vocalists from the 60s.  The only sad thing is I don’t know when I’ll have a chance to see them live.  Here’s hoping for a trip out west, Las Vegas would be nice!

On a random note, it may be just me but the opening chords on “Hold On” have me thinking it’s a take on CCR’s “Down on the Corner.” I could be way off but that’s what I hear.
