Top Albums of 2010

9 Dec

Sure there are many great CDs released in 2010 but I think I actually agree with Rolling Stone, they put together a list that’s pretty damn good.  Their Top 10 is really hard to argue with but I’d actually put Kings of Leon – Come Around Sundown (the disc especially “Back Down South” reminds me of why I because a fan seven years ago), Beach House – Teen Dream (this was definitely one of those surprise discs and pushed the duo to stardom) and Yeasayer – Odd Blood (great disc and “Ambling Alp” is hands down one of the best songs of the year) up higher.

Fitz & The Tantrums on Striped Down Live

3 Dec

The last month my music world has been turned upside down with my discovery of Fitz & The Tantrums. I wish I would have known about them sooner because I’m addicted to their album and earlier this week they joined Curt Smith (Tears For Fears) on his program Stripped Down Live.  If you’re digging the music or have yet to discover Fitz & The Tantrums, be sure to watch this video and hear how good they are and also get some history of the band.

Ben Harper – Fistful of Mercy

30 Nov

If you are a Ben Harper fan and you haven’t already, check out his latest project, Fistful of Mercy.  Consisting of Harper, Dhani Harrison (George Harrison’s son) and Joseph Harper, the trio released their debut album, As I Call You Down this past October.  The first single off the album is well, “Fistful of Mercy” but check out the video below of the band performing “Father’s Son” with special guest Tom Morello of Rage Against The Machine on Conan earlier this month.

New Music: The Parties – Coast Garde

24 Nov

I’m totally digging this band, The Parties.  The quartet is from San Francisco and their sound definitely is a throwback to 60s rock and roll/pop.  The band just release their latest work call Coast Garde and I’ve found it to one of those all around great discs.  I think if you give it a listen you will find that each song sounds like bands we have all grown up loving or at least have helped shape my musical tastes (think The Beatles, The Byrds, CSN, etc.).

NEW: Lupe Fiasco ft. John Legend – “Never Forget You”

19 Nov

As I’ve clearly stated on the blog before, I’m a huge Lupe Fiasco fan.  As for John Legend, he’s very talented and has a ton of great songs but I’ve never really been into him.  Well, I just listened to Lupe Fiasco’s new track “Never Forget You” featuring John Legend and this may slowly start turning that dial for me. I’m addicted to this song which is definitely a bit of a change for Lupe’s style but wow how Legend’s voice impacts this great tune.  Let’s all hope that it makes it onto Lasers due out next year.  Check it out below and also take a look at the lyrics.

Ou Est Le Swimming Pool – The Golden Year

16 Nov

Another CD that has been on heavy rotation for me as of late is The Golden Year by Ou Est Le Swimming Pool.  Their debut album is great and you may know them from the song posted below, “Dance The Way I Feel.”  Unfortunately the lead singer, Charles Haddon committed suicide over the summer so unless there are works hiding in the archives, this is all we’ll get out of the synthpop group Camden, London.

New Music: Fitz & The Tantrums

11 Nov

While I love discovering new music and find new bands each week, every once in a while I get completely enamored with a band the instant I hear them (like Black Joe Lewis and The Honeybears) and the latest is Fitz & The Tantrums. I’m fumbling over words in sheer excitement; I just love their sound which is a mix of soul and indie pop.  Their LP Picken’ Up The Pieces is an amazing one from beginning to end and will most definitely be on heavy rotation for me.  Oh and a cool little fact to their rise in the music industry, Adam Levine of Maroon 5 was in a tattoo parlor in NYC and heard the EP; he then invited them on tour. Pretty damn cool if you ask me.

New Music: Adam Kesher

10 Nov

Who’s going to be the next French band to follow in Phoenix’s footsteps of worldwide stardom? Adam Kesher, that’s who (well I sure hope so).  The quintuplet, yes it’s not just one guy, is legit and definitely a name you should remember.  Their sophomore effort, Challenging Nature is full of energy spanning rock, electro, funk and was produced by Chromeo’s Dave One with some added star power from A-Trak and Philippe Zdar of Cassius.  Still not convinced? Check out the single below, “Gravy Train” to get a taste of what you’ll want to be listening to.

Introducing Tinie Tempah

25 Oct

The wave of hip-hop, electro artists from the UK keeps rising and pumping out chart toppers.  First came Dizzee Rascal then Tinchy Stryder and now Tinie Tempah.  If you’ve never heard of Tinie Tempah, do yourself a favor and make a point to do so.  His debut record, Disc-Overy dropped earlier this month and in London, he is on fire.  Just who is Tinie Tempah?  He won Best Video at the MOBO Awards last week for “Frisky” featuring Labrinth and his latest single “Miami 2 Ibiza” features Swedish House Mafia.  “Invincible” featuring Kelly Rowland should be his next club banger as the rise of Tinie Tempah continues.

Duck Sauce (Armand Van Helden and A-Trak) – “Barbra Streisand” Video

16 Oct

The song which has been out for some months now is dope and the video which recently came out is a cameo music machine. If you haven’t seen this yet, take a few minutes and pay close attention to the below and see who you spot.
