Bottlerock 2016 lineup is here

5 Jan

This morning Bottlerock dropped its 2016 lineup and nice one for Napa Valley. Three big headliners in Stevie Wonder, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Florence + The Machine. The return of The Lumineers will be welcomed along with big names like Death Cab For Cutie, Lenny Kravitz and younger bands like Walk The Moon, Grouplove and Misterwives. Michael Franti is back and is a great show for Bottlerock, Cold War Kids should be received well like Cage The Elephant in 2015 and smaller acts like Houndmouth, X Ambassadors, The Suffers, San Fermin, Coleman Hell, Langhorne Slim, Son Little, etc. Congrats to the Latitude 38 Ent team on another solid lineup for Napa Valley.

Coachella 2016 lineup is here

5 Jan

Late Monday night Coachella dropped its 2016 lineup. With Guns n’ Roses and LCD Soundsystem as headliners (and both reuniting) leaked early on, the anticipation was only building for the remainder of the lineup. My hats off to the Goldenvoice team for putting together yet another massive lineup for music fans to salivate at. This year is clearly very dance heavy (as expected) and obviously there is going to be more electro(nic) incorporated into the Coachella Stage and Outdoor Theater stage. Also with Calvin Harris drawing the largest crowd in Coachella Stage history in 2014 it’s no surprise to see him headlining as well this year. I’ll get to may favorite small line artists below but I think the most interesting part of the lineup is at the bottom which states “DESPACIO All Weekend Long;” and should get every LCD Soundsystem (and music) fan excited because if you aren’t familiar, DESPACIO is a side project of James Murphy and 2manydjs! It’s so rad, see for yourself, HERE.

The top line artists speak for themselves but let’s get into the fun stuff, discovery. Here are my quick hits to the artists you may not know but should by April. If I had to name just one of the below for your to really get lost in, Gallant.  Oh baby!

Friday: Ibeyi, Black Coffee, Years & Years, HEALTH, Mavis Staples, Goldroom, Gallant, HAELOS, Miami Horror

Saturday: Chronixx, AlunaGeorge (who dazzled in 2014), Shamir, Moon Taxi, Ex Hex, Mr. Carmack, Alvvays, Algiers, Cloves, Phases

Sunday: HudMo, Kamasi Washington, Melody’s Echo Chamber, Anderson .Paak, Nosaj Thing, Epik High, Tensnake, Alessia Cara, Crystal Fighters, PRAYERS, Young Fathers, the Heavy, Girlpool, AC Slater

I’m all in on Big Grams

20 Oct

After seeing Big Grams’ debut public performance at Treasure Island Music Festival last weekend, not only am I convinced it was the best set of the weekend but man this show is only going to get better! Get ready to see them on nearly every festival lineup in 2016 and for good reason. While Big Boi and Phantogram have chopped it up for years, getting on stage to perform their self titled debut album you would think may take some work but man it was tight and on point even down to the production. Bringing out Run The Jewels for “Born To Shine” was a nice touch, “Put It On Her” sounds like classic OutKast and the “Ms. Jackson”/”Mouthful of Diamonds” mashup was perfect and the crowd was eating up the whole set. As for me, I’ve been listening to the album on repeat for the last two days and falling in love with it more and more every spin.

Countdown to Life is Beautiful: 5 Days – Duran Duran

20 Sep

I don’t think they need any intro, Duran Duran are performing in less than a week in Downtown Las Vegas at Life is Beautiful. Just wow! Fun fact, back in 2008 Duran Duran played Vegas they brought out a special guest, Brandon Flowers of The Killers! Perhaps lightning will strike twice? I sure hope so!

Countdown to Life is Beautiful: 7 Days – Royal Blood

18 Sep

“I’ve seen the future of riff rock and it’s name is #RoyalBlood” – Tom Morello

And you know what, he’s right! The UK duo of ‎Mike Kerr and Ben Thatcher absolutely destroy it on stage together. If you are a rock and roller, this is the one show of Life is Beautiful you cannot miss. And bring your earplugs because it’s going to be loud, in your face and righteous!

Countdown to Life is Beautiful: 8 Days – Run The Jewels

17 Sep

Hellooooooo Vegas! Run The Jewels = if you’ve never seen Killer Mike and El-P live, you’re missing out. Good thing we’re going to fix that for you on Sunday, September 27 at 7:55pm on the Ambassador Stage at Life is Beautiful. The duo just appeared last night on the Late Show with Stephen Colbert, last weekend performed in the UK at Banksy’s Dismaland Bemusement Park (p.s. Banksy is coming to the festival!) and for the last two years have been simply, on fire!

To give you a taste of what to expect, here’s their performance from Bonnaroo this past summer.

Here’s a photo I snapped at SXSW this year. So good!

Countdown to Life is Beautiful: 10 Days – Rebelution, SOJA and The Green

14 Sep

Yep, 10 days out! It’s the homestretch and today’s featured artists are Rebelution, SOJA and The Green because this is the first year we have featured reggae at Life is Beautiful! As a reggae fan I’m stoked on this and definitely going to be feeling the good vibes when these three bands take the stage at the festival.

It’s gonna be hot, the sun will (hopefully) be shining and the drinks will be flowing.

Countdown to Life is Beautiful: 11 Days – Walk The Moon

13 Sep

This one is special to me and I’ll champion Walk The Moon for as long as I can because they are a great group of guys and their music is fantastic. I only wish for good things to happen to good people. I was a fan of Walk The Moon the first time I ever heard “Anna Sun” and wrote about them on the blog back in May of 2011. I first saw them on the Sonic Bids Stage at Bonnaroo later that year and was enamored with their live show. At the time I was writing concert reviews for Vegas Seven and was asked to start interviewing bands for some upcoming columns. The first ask was to Walk The Moon. I ended up meeting the guys in the Lollapalooza media village where we proceeded to sit Indian style in a circle underneath a tree so I could conduct the interview. It was so bizarre yet worked beautifully. Since those days the guys have exploded and are riding an all time high to stardom and I couldn’t be more excited. They put out as much energy as any band on stage and what they receive from the crowd is tenfold. It’s a sight to witness and on Sunday of Life is Beautiful, I cannot wait to see thousands of screaming fans singing and dancing. Get your face paint ready, pull out your dancing shoes and let’s go!

Countdown to Life is Beautiful: 13 Days – Shamir

11 Sep

Vegas represent! All of Las Vegas should be getting excited for Shamir to mark his homecoming at Life is Beautiful. Heralded by Pitchfork, NPR and several more outlets, Shamir Bailey is finding gold everywhere he turns lately. Heck he was one plane away from working on a pig farm in Arkansas and now he’s music’s darling with his debut album Ratchet. His blend of experimental, funk, disco sounds with his light voice just flat out works. I know we’re excited to welcome him home on Friday, September 25. See you there!

Countdown to Life is Beautiful: 14 Days – Glass Animals

10 Sep

I’ve been fortunate enough to see Glass Animals a handful of times this year and the best part is never getting tired of their show and always craving more. Lucky for me (and you), we have them at Life is Beautiful in just two weeks! I hope you get as excited as I am that they are coming to Downtown Las Vegas, this is going to be one of those sets you just have to be at.
