I was saddened on July 24 when I read about 21 people dead and over 500 injured at the 2010 Love Parade. In what was a fun, festive environment when I attended in 2001, it’s hard to fathom how something like this could happen. Hopefully nothing like this ever happens again and the event can continue with the happy, carefree people and amazing music event it has traditionally been.
The Love Parade for me holds some amazing memories. I remember when I attended, getting off the train and being able to hear the electronic music blaring and welcoming you to Berlin and music mayhem! Even the police were getting down and had their own sound system setup. The highlight might have been rolling into a club at about 4 a.m. to hear Paul van Dyk spin. This is back in 2001 before he had really blown up in the states. With hotel rooms fully occupied, we slept on concrete park benches for a couple hours before heading into the main square for the actual parade filled with Mardi Gras style floats and one million of my closest friends. Truly a sight to see and experience.
