My Review of The Black Keys in Vegas SEVEN

13 Jan

Just before 2012 ended I had the opportunity to see The Black Keys in concert, yet again. This time at The Joint at the Hard Rock Hotel on New Year’s Eve weekend. Check out my review of night one which ran in the most recent issue of Vegas SEVEN.

For the record, I’ll never pass on a chance to see The Black Keys in concert.  Each show may be very similar in comparison but seeing them in front of 80,000 screaming fans or 400, they sound just as good and you never leave disappointed.

New Outkast, well sort of….”Pink Matter” Frank Ocean ft. Andre 3000 remix ft. Big Boi

12 Jan

Been going crazy about this for the last couple days. I mean it’s as close to an Outkast song as we’ve got right now. Thanks Frank Ocean! So check it, Big Boi just dropped the remix of Frank Ocean’s “Pink Matter” which already featured Andre 3000. What more can I say but listen, love and repeat.

Happy Birthday David Bowie and thanks for the new music!

Happy Birthday David Bowie!  66 today and what does he offer up to fans?  How about some new music! “Where Are We Now?” off the upcoming album, The Next Day, his first in nearly a decade.  Give a listen….

Music Monday: Bad Books – “Forest Whitaker”

7 Jan

Happy Monday and now you get to have this gem stuck in your head like it has been in mine for the couple months. “Forest Whitaker” off the Bad Books album II.

Now Playing: Shovels & Rope – “Birmingham”

4 Jan

Happy Friday! The first one of 2013 so why not put a little new music in your ears, Shovels & Rope. The duo of Michael Trent and Cary Ann Hearst just opened for The Lumineers on NYE in Denver and I gather you’re going to see them appear on a bunch of festival lineups this year (just added yesterday to Wakarusa). Their debut album O’ Be Joyful dropped in July of 2012 and is a diamond in the rough if you haven’t discovered it already. Plus since they are part of Dualtone Music Group, expect only good things to come for these two.

HELLO 2013! Why not some good tunes to get the new year off in the right direction. Here is a collection of music I’ve really been digging as of late and hopefully some of the musicians become household names this year. Enjoy!

Las Vegas NYE Weekend: The Killers and The Black Keys (images)

31 Dec

Counting down the final hours of 2012 and boy oh boy what a NYE weekend it has been so far. Friday and Saturday were all about The Killers for me. They delivered two amazing concerts over at The Cosmopolitan to wrap up their current North American tour. The band, the crowd, the room, the energy, it all came together and for two nights was an incredible display of rock and roll. I can’t wait to see them live again.

Last night it was over to the Hard Rock Hotel to catch The Black Keys on the first of their two nights of shows in Vegas. It was gritty rock and roll as expected and always fun to see the duo live. Be on the lookout for my review of the show in Vegas SEVEN next week.

Five For Friday: NYE, The Black Crowes, Top 21 Songs of 2012

28 Dec

Well here we go, the final Friday in 2012!

  1. NYE Weekend in Las Vegas is always crazy but this year it is filled with an incredible line-up of music both in nightclubs and concert halls. Tonight it’s all about The Killers performing at The Cosmopolitan for me. Tomorrow, I’ll double-down on them. Sunday I’m heading to see The Black Keys – I’ve seen them in front of 400 people, 80,000 people and everything in between and the duo have yet to disappoint. Not a bad way to end the year with a few stellar shows.
  2. The Black Crowes announced a return from hiatus and will head out on tour next year!! And with that sadly comes the departure of lead guitarist Luther Dickinson but in his place comes the incredibly talented Jackie Greene who Chris Robinson had been touring with along with Bob Weir.
  3. Get ready for Festival line-up announcements which should start coming out in early January (Coachella) and February (Bonnaroo).
  4. Check out some of my music favorites from 2012 HERE.
  5. Lastly, I know there are a ton of Top XYZ lists on best albums, songs, newcomers, reissues, etc. so while there are just too many out there for me to list, here are 21 songs (hey that’s blackjack where I’m from) that I feel either a) defined the year in music or b) flew under the radar from the masses. In no particular order:
  • Fun. – “Some Nights”
  • The Lumineers – “Ho Hey”
  • Of Monsters and Men – “Little Talks”
  • Baywood – “I Can Breathe Again”
  • Hospitality – “It’s Too Late”
  • Wild Cub – “Thunder Clatter”
  • Mumford & Sons – “I Will Wait”
  • Chvrches – “The Mother We Share”
  • Night Terrors of 1927 – “Dust and Bones”
  • The Mowgli’s – “San Francisco”
  • Frank Ocean – “Thinkin Bout You”
  • San Cisco – “Awkward”
  • Family of the Year – “The Stairs”
  • Japandroids – “The House That Heaven Built”
  • Kendrick Lamar – “Swimming Pools”
  • Ghost Beach – “Miracle”
  • Gorillaz ft. Andree 300 and James Murphy – “DoYaThing”
  • Passion Pit – “I’ll Be Alright”
  • Haim – “Forever”
  • Alabama Shakes – “Hold On”
  • Lord Huron – “Time To Run”
