Michael Franti and Spearhead – The Sound of Sunshine

21 Sep

Michael Franti is one of those artists I could listen to nonstop every day.  His latest release The Sound of Sunshine is definitely the most upbeat album in the collection and it works beautifully.  I can already tell this is going to be a vacation soundtrack for me in the near future.  The title track “The Sound of Sunshine” is a great way to kick off the disc and really get the good vibes flowing and put a smile on your face.  “Hey Hey Hey” keeps the positive message going while “I’ll Be Waiting” will catch some off guard as you hear a U2 rift in the background.  “Love Don’t Wait” is upbeat and catchy, a bit reminiscent of his last hit “Say Hey (I Love You)”  while “The Thing That Helps Me Get Through” is a Lenny Kravitz-esque track.  While it’s still early and I need to keep listening, I’m loving The Sound of Sunshine disc.

Looking Ahead At New Music Tuesday – 9/21

20 Sep

Wow tomorrow is an insane day of new music releases. I’m very excited about a handful of discs and it’s looking like my ears are going to be getting a full dose of tunes to listen to this week. Below are some of the notable releases:

Michael Franti & Spearhead – The Sound of Sunshine

John Legend & The Roots – Wake Up!

Zac Brown Band – You Get What You Give

Matt Costa – Mobile Chateau

The Script – Science & Faith

Maroon 5 – Hand It All Over

Black Country Communion – Black Country Communion

Jamey Johnson – The Guitar Song

New Music: Kings of Leon – Come Around Sundown

17 Sep

As are many, I can’t wait for Come Around Sundown, the fifth release from Kings of Leon to be released in October.  What makes me really excited are the few songs I’ve heard already bring me back to Youth and Young Manhood which is my favorite KoL disc and what really made me dig the Tennessee rockers’ sound.  While “Radioactive” the first single off Come Around Sundown was released earlier this month, take a listen to “Back Down South” below as this may soon be the next hit from the Followill’s.

New Music: Brandon Flowers – Flamingo

7 Sep

I was a bit skeptical when I heard Brandon Flowers was working on a solo project and wondered if it could be a success.  Well wonder no longer, everything I’ve heard so far is great and yes, he can do it all on his own.  Flamingo comes out on September 14 but head to SPIN.com * to preview the album.  It’s quite fantastic and the opening track “Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas” should become the unofficial anthem for Las Vegas while the first single off the album “Crossfire” has a great beat, rising chorus and is an awesome track that could easily be a Killers song.

Flamingo has me excited like I was the first time I heard The Killers’ Hot Fuss.  I very well may be wrong but this fall could turn out to be Brandon Flowers’ rise to solo stardom fully putting The Killers on the backburner.

*While the spin.com link gives you 40 second previews of the tracks, do some web surfing and you’ll find complete songs.

New Music: The Ting Tings – Hands

7 Sep

The Ting Tings are back!  A few weeks ago they debuted their new single “Hands” off the upcoming album Kunst and the music video was releasesd a couple days ago.  In addition to having another great electro-pop dance track (with a little 80s style mixed in), the Tings Tings had music wonder Calvin Harris produce the track; it really doesn’t get any better.  Give a listen and see for yourself.

New Music Video: Cee Lo – F@*K You

2 Sep

Cee Lo Green strikes gold again with his latest single, “Fuck You.” Don’t fear the title, the song is awesome and the video is even better. If you haven’t seen the video, check out it below.

Also check out Thomas Conner’s piece in the Chicago Sun Times on Cee Lo and how the power of the internet has made this song a success and has over four million hits already.

New Music: Ryan Bingham – Junky Star

1 Sep

New Music Tuesday this week was fantastic and it also marked the release of Ryan Bingham & The Dead Horses new album, Junky Star.  I’m really not sure what it is but I have never been able to get enough of his music and considering that he’s a country artist, that’s what’s most surprising to me as my friends are the first to know I don’t listen to country music.  Well that’s sort of changed over the last year and I credit Bingham’s wraspy voice and gritty sound.  It could also be that Marc Ford formerly of the Black Crowes produced the first two albums.  Well Junky Star which was produced by T Bone Burnett, has me after just one listen.  I’m definitely going to need to give the disc a few listens before making a concrete assessment but so far, so good.

New Music: Deadmau5 and Wolfgang Gartner – Animal Rights

31 Aug

The anticipated summer collaboration between Deadmau5 and Wolfgang Gartner is finally here! “Animal Rights” is an electro heavy hitter that is sure to be on club playlist rotation for the months to come. I believe the track first debuted three days ago on BBC Radio 1 Live at Creamfields.

New Music: Matt & Kim – Cameras

31 Aug

Matt & Kim who rose to mainstream stardom with their hit song “Daylight” featured in the Bacardi Mojito commercial are back with “Cameras,” the first single off their upcoming LP Sidewalks which drops November 2.

If you have a chance to see this duo live, do it! I did earlier this summer and they put on quite a performance – high energy, fast paced and they came out to Notorious B.I.G. “Running Your Mouth,” what’s not to love?!

New Music: Kanye West – Monster ft. Jay-Z, Rick Ross, Nicki Minaj and Justin Vernon

30 Aug

WOW. If you haven’t heard Kanye West’s new track “Monster,” drop what you are doing and take a listen. Not only does Kanye share the spotlight with Jay-Z and Rick Ross but Nicki Minaj might have trumped the three rap rulers and shines on this. The track also features Justin Vernon of Bon Iver.

If Kanye holds up to his promise of releasing a new track every Friday until Christmas we could be in store for some smash hits week after week. Even if Yeezy says things like “My biggest regret in life is that I’ll never get to see myself perform live,” have to admit, dude can make music and we’ll keep listening.
