New Music: Go Back To The Zoo

31 Jan

They’ve been around for a bit but a band I’ve been listening to for the last several weeks that’s growing on me is Go Back To The Zoo.  The Dutch indie band released their debut album Benny Blisto in the summer of 2010 and thanks to the power of the internet for helping me discover these guys.

NOW PLAYING: Brett Dennen – “Sydney (I’ll Come Running)”

26 Jan

Brett Dennen is one of those artists who seems to be able to just pen a great song time and time again.  Right now I really love his new tune “Sydney (I’ll Come Running)” which is set to appear on his new album Loverboy due out later this year.  I’ve had the pleasure to hear him jam this a couple times while he was on tour with Dave Matthews Band last summer and this song has hit written all over it.  Give a listen and let’s here what you think.

TONIGHT: Black Joe Lewis & The Honeybears – Las Vegas Best Be Ready

26 Jan

Today is officially one of the best days in 2011 at least for me as Black Joe Lewis & The Honeybears descend on Las Vegas to begin a four-night residency at Book & Stage at Cosmopolitan.  I know I practically live there but you can’t blame me as they are bringing in some amazing groups to perform and let’s just say if you miss out on these Black Joe Lewis performances you are only hurting yourself.

Belting out blues, soul, funk and rock, Black Joe Lewis has the potential to be our modern day James Brown. I know that is a bold statement but come check out the shows and you’ll have to agree.  Having had the pleasure of seeing the group perform in a room of 200 and an arena of 14,000, these guys bring it each and every time and can get a crowd dancing and feeling the groove in no time.

On the verge of releasing their new album Scandalous on March 15, Black Joe Lewis & The Honeybears will have an arsenal of  sweet music to treat us to for the next four nights.

To get you in the right state of mind, check out one of my favorite tracks, “Sugarfoot” off their album Tell ‘Em What Your Name Is and see you at the Book & Stage.

Now Playing: GIVERS – “Up Up Up”

24 Jan

It’s Music Monday and what better way to start the week off than listening to GIVERS’ “Up Up Up.”  Hopefully this upbeat track from the pure fun Louisiana rockers will get you going on the right foot and have good vibes running through your veins.

If you’re in the Northwest catch them this week with Ra Ra Riot and for the rest of us, GIVERS will be once again playing SXSW this year.

In Vegas? You MUST See Aloe Blacc This Weekend

21 Jan

Let me preface by saying Aloe Blacc is one heck of a showman exuding energy, a golden voice and flat out performs some of the best soul music around.  If you’ve missed his performances the past two nights at Book & Stage at Cosmopolitan, make sure you do yourself a favor and head over there tonight and tomorrow.  Showtimes are at 10 p.m. and midnight.

Last night Mr. Blacc was also on CONAN performing “I Need A Dollar,” check out the clip below so you know what you are in for.

Smith Westerns – Dye It Blonde

20 Jan

Earlier this week Chicago indie rockers Smith Westerns released their second LP Dye It Blonde.  With an upbeat retro rock and pop sound (think 60s and glam rock eras), they kill it with whinny guitar riffs and not complex lyrics to put together a disc full of catchy tunes.  Having been on tour in the past with Girls and MGMT, check this trio out as headliners rather than being known as the supporting act.  Listen to the title track “Weekend” as well as “End of the Night” and “Dance Away.”

Check Em Out: Foster The People

19 Jan

My excitement for Coachella is probably not going to subside until the festival has come and gone so here’s a taste of some music to check out before April from an indie-pop band you may not be familiar with, Foster The People.

Their jam “Pumped Up Kicks” which has been out for close to a year now will have you forgetting about the cold of winter and dreaming of the sun shining with the wind blowing through your hair and a smile on your face as large as the Grand Canyon.

The LA based rockers just released a three-song EP on iTunes yesterday and a full LP is slated to drop soon.

If you’re a fan of MGMT and Peter, Bjorn & John you must listen to these guys.
